Review
“I love this book. It helps people to truly walk in someone else’s footprints. This guide will show beginning teachers and other professionals how to build successful relationships with their students' parents.”
(Natalie Marston, Principal 2011-10-21)

"If parents and professionals could wear out their shoes by dancing the way Fialka, Feldman, and Mikus describe it in this book, the shoes would indeed be worth pressing against one’s heart. Through stories, the authors expertly choreograph the steps families, professionals, and the children must take to foster this essential relationship―like a waltz: one, two, three." (Robin McWilliam, Director, Center for Child and Family Research 2011-10-21)

"This book beautifully reminds us that social change happens through listening, dialogue, and engagement. Beneath our roles as professionals and parents, these authors gently help us to remember that 'we are all people first,' and through empathy we can find ways to sidestep―or dance― around many of the missteps that lead to misunderstanding and conflict. This book is a wonderful resource for anyone trying to navigate the complexities of supporting and advocating for disabled students in inclusive classrooms." (Emma Van der Klift and Norman Kunc, Co- directors 2011-11-03)

“A mother who found her calling through fate or accident―and never looked away or glanced back―Janice Fialka is internationally renowned for her relentless, never-say-never advocacy. She and her coauthors offer hope and wisdom for parents who would see more clearly into the lives of their children―disabled or not―and for every professional who would engage them.” (Bill Ayers, Author, To Teach: The Journey of a Teacher and A Kind and Just Parent 2011-12-19)

“Rarely does a book hold such promise for promoting genuine partnerships between families of children with disabilities and the professionals who participate in their care. The real-life passages from the authors, seasoned parents, and experienced professionals infuse this work with unparalleled authenticity.” (Susan Addison, Special Educator, Retired 2011-12-19)

“The authors get right to the heart of parent-professional relationships. They deconstruct and reconstruct the difficult process of examining how parents and professionals communicate. The stories used to illustrate specific points are superb. We need this thoughtful and provoking perspective to encourage us to listen more closely to one another for the benefit our children.” (Martha E. Mock, Assistant Professor 2011-12-19)

“This book accomplishes two impressive feats. First: it conveys, through information and examples, research-based practices for building family-professional partnerships. Second: the clear, storytelling style of writing makes it impossible to put down. This is a must for anyone whose responsibilities involve working with the families of children with disabilities.” (Pamela J. Winton, Senior Scientist and Director of Outreach 2011-12-19)

“The authors powerfully illustrate the ‘dance of partnership’ in complex and nuanced ways. They capture how things are in the real world of relationships between parents and professionals. The stories are moving, the perspectives insightful, and practical strategies and suggestions abound. I recommend this book as a superb source of guidance and support.” (Shari Saunders, Clinical Associate Professor 2011-12-19)

“This is a book written with a quality that is both honest and sensitive. The authors force us to put aside all other issues, reminding us what is real and essential in our pursuit of genuine student learning.” (Georgina M. Terrigno, Speech and Language Pathologist 2011-12-19)

“Having attended many challenging problem-solving meetings, I know how important it is for families and professionals to keep open hearts and minds. This unique resource moves beyond the ‘how to’s’ of effective communication and reminds us of the values that are central to any great team―generosity, creativity, and a willingness to learn from one another.” (Paula Kluth, Consultant & Author, You’re Going to Love This Kid: Teaching Students with Autism in the Inclusive Classroom 2011-12-19)

“The authors capture the range of family and provider experiences, communication styles, and strategies that create effective partnerships. This book is a critically important read for families, providers, and especially for preservice students entering professions in which they will work with children and families.” (Beth Swedeen, Parent and Executive Director 2011-12-20)

“As I read this book, I realized that I kept switching back and forth from my ‘professional’ hat to my ‘parent’ hat. Helping us to switch hats is the real power of this work. The personal stories highlight well-documented themes in the literature on parent and professional perspectives. The strategies are practical and effective. This is a text I will revisit often.” (Dr. Julie Ricks-Doneen, Director, Lowry Center for Early Childhood Education 2011-12-20)

“This is a wonderful reference book to help parent and professionals ‘dance the dance’ together and avoid any missteps. The authors help readers understand the underlying thoughts of both the parent and the professional when they meet to set up a program. This is a sure read for both parents and education professionals.” (Filomena Bernatowicz, Teacher and member, Committee on Preschool Special Education 2011-12-20)

“The authors waltz us through steps to develop effective parent-professional partnerships using dance as a metaphor. When practiced by all participants in the dance, the result is mutual understanding and respect: the core of collaborative relationships. Theirs is a fresh approach to a much-discussed subject―a delightful invitation to dance.” (Elizabeth W. Bauer, Consultant 2011-12-20)

“In my 15 years of teaching, I have not come across a book that so eloquently describes the sensitive relationship between schools and parents as they navigate through the special education process. Using dancing as a metaphor for this delicate relationship, the authors provide an easy-to-read manual that perfectly compliments a college class or professional book study.” (Jennifer Grieco, Special Education Teacher 2011-12-20)

“This book’s valuable information and insights make it a ‘must read’ for everyone involved in the special education process. I will refer to this book frequently as it reminds me of the often unsaid feelings and concerns of parents. The authors provide numerous useful approaches so that all parties can collaborate and do what is best for the child.” (Jacqueline Rau, Fifth-Grade Special Education Teacher 2011-12-20)

“Brilliantly written from the differing vantage points of both parents and professionals, this book shows how perceptions and assumptions can be falsely formed between ‘opponents.’ Use this knowledge to develop the strong partnerships necessary for parents and professionals to collaborate and support the needs of students!" (Kathy Brill, Board Member 2011-12-20)

“So often in special education, the people involved share the same goal, yet envision a different path to achieve that goal. The authors remind us that our ultimate goal is the same. They show us how, even in the most difficult situations, we can ‘dance’ together in successful collaboration.” (Tara Rounds, School Psychologist, CSE/CPSE Chairperson 2011-12-20)

“This book offers important suggestions for finding a way to dance together, reminding us exactly why we are dancing―for the child. I strongly recommend this text to parents and professionals. The real-life examples will help all parties understand and empathize with each other, making it that much easier to dance together.” (Jo Spahr, Parent of a special needs child, and IEP committee member 2011-12-20)

“The parent-professional relationship can be awkward, so using the metaphor of learning to dance together to benefit children is apt. With the resources to help children shrinking, it is more vital than ever for parents and professionals to forge strong partnerships. This perspective can really help―highly recommended.” (Robert A. Naseef, Author of Special Children, Challenged Parents 2011-12-20)

“The authors have done the near impossible―they have described the process of partnership in a way that is both easily accessible and incredibly nuanced. They provide a developmental roadmap and the concrete tools we need to make partnerships work. In this book, I have finally found the resource I need.” (Ethan Lowenstein, Associate Professor of Curriculum and Instruction 2011-12-20)

“The approach of this book is fresh, current and multifaceted without being complicated. The authors have skillfully woven multiple and complex family and professional perspectives into a well-integrated whole that is thoughtful, clear, and explicit. The material is relevant, useful, and extraordinarily helpful to a wide variety of dance partners.” (Camille Catlett, Scientist 2011-12-20)

“This book comes from the heart of an author who knows both sides. The content is relevant, immediately useful, and encourages us to think deeply about ourselves and how we can apply the information to make a difference―all evidence-based components of effective adult learning.” (Juliann Woods, Director 2011-12-20)

“The authors never forget that it is all about the children/students with disabilities―so the adults just need to figure it out! They include many subtle examples of how inclusion can work throughout the book. An important take-away message is that becoming true partners takes time and is a process.” (Peggy A. Gallagher, Professor of Early Childhood Special Education 2011-12-20)

“The authors help readers understand that relationships are about human needs and feelings and that partnerships only develop to their potential when each party can both share and listen to content and facts as well as the needs and feelings of the other. This book is destined to be a classic. Give it to someone you care about; and read it yourself reflectively.” (Michael Peterson, Director 2011-12-20)

“The authors of this book offer a welcomed, kind and needed message for both professionals and parents: slow the pace, stop and listen. The authors know we build each partnership one at a time. This is a message we desperately need to get into higher education and professional development communities.” (Mary Jane Brotherson, Professor, Department of Human Development and Family Studies 2011-12-20)

“This book reminds teachers and professionals to include parents in the timeline of the special education process. The information that parents contribute and different perspective they provide can help us understand the whole child. As I finished this book, I developed a more open perspective to working with parents.” (Maura Crown, Special Education Teacher 2011-12-20)

“I will use this book as a key text in my courses that include the topics of collaborative teaching, home-school partnerships, and conflict mediation. What a great book for modeling for new teachers the realities of collaboration in the IEP process and the best practices that make the process a joyful dance rather than a difficult experience.” (Jacqueline Thousand, Professor 2011-12-20)

“Using understandable, jargon-free language, the authors help professionals and parents understand each others’ viewpoints. The text also provides practical tips and suggestions about how to work together collaboratively. I highly recommend this book for novice and veteran parents and professionals.” (Stephanie Smith Lee, Former Director, Office of Special Education Programs 2011-12-20)

“I found myself nodding in agreement with virtually all the points made in this book. The process is, indeed, a dance. Although one would think we have mastered dancing, each student, each family, each day brings forth a new dance. As partners and parents we need to tweak out that uniqueness in the child together.” (Jo-Anne Dobbins, Director of Pupil Personnel Services 2011-12-20)

“This book serves as a vital resource and provides essential viewpoints for professionals. The text also reminds parents how valuable their input is to the process. In the spirit of collaboration, we highly recommend this book.” (Tiiu Presutti, Special Education Teacher, Melinda Sulzbach, School Social Worker & Adrienne Hershfield, School Psychologist 2011-12-20)

Beautiful.
By Lee Ann Jung
It can be easy for professionals in special education to become lost in the sea of acronyms, legalese, and seemingly endless prescribed procedures for special education services. Fialka and her coauthors move us far beyond these procedural elements to refocus our attention on people and relationships. They offer brilliant guidance for navigating relationships as families and providers work together to support children. This will be required reading in my course on families in the future.

Working together for a special needs child
By Barbara Laird
I recommend this book to anyone faced with an IEP, or any situation where you need to understand and be understood to come to an agreement. The book deals with two parties who have the best interests of a special needs child, but come with different ideas on the best solution. Fialka and Feldman present many ideas, illustrated with interesting stories, on how to make the process go from awkward missteps to smoother dancing.

Amazon.com Review
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but it also has a lot to do with the beholder's cultural standards. In History of Beauty, renowned author Umberto Eco sets out to demonstrate how every historical era has had its own ideas about eye-appeal. Pages of charts that track archetypes of beauty through the ages ("nude Venus," "nude Adonis," and so forth) may suggest that this book is a historical survey of beautiful people portrayed in art. But History of Beauty is really about the history of philosophical and perceptual notions of perfection and how they have been applied to ideas and objects, as well as to the human body. This survey ranges over such themes as the mathematics of ideal proportions, the problem of representing ugliness, the fascination of the exotic and art for art's sake. Along the way, the text examines the intersection of standards of beauty with Christian belief, notions of the Sublime, the philosophies of Kant and Hegel, and bourgeois culture. More than 300 illustrations trace the history of Western art as it relates, in the broadest sense, to the topic of beauty.

Yet despite its wealth of information, History of Beauty is an odd and unsatisfying book. Beginning with ancient Greece and ending with a too-brief chapter on "The Beauty of the Media," the text focuses exclusively (and unapologetically) on the Western world. Ultimately, it seems that "beauty" serves simply as a sexy peg on which to hang an abbreviated history of Western culture. Readers expecting a sophisticated treatment of the subject will be surprised at the textbook-like design, with numbered sections and boldfaced words keyed to small-type excerpts from writings by thinkers ranging from Boethius to Barthes. The main narrative (or perhaps the translation from the Italian?) can be ponderous and awkward. Only nine of the 17 chapters were written by Eco; the remainder are by lesser-known Italian novelist Girolamo de Michele. All in all, it looks as though someone had the bright idea of translating a textbook for Italian students into English, hoping to coast on the fame of Eco's name. --Cathy Curtis

From Publishers Weekly
This inspired book begins, after a little throat-clearing, with 11 verso-recto "comparative tables"—sets of contact-sheet–like illustrations that trace representations of "Nude Venus" and "Nude Adonis" (clothed sets follow) as well as Madonna, Jesus, "Kings" and "Queens" over thousands of years, revealing with wonderful brevity the scope of the task Eco has set for the book. What follows is a dense, delectable tour through the history of art as it struggled to cope with beauty's many forms. The text, while rigorous in its inquiries, is heavy on abstractions, which get amplified by stiff translation: "In short, the question was how to retable the debate about the Classical antitheses of thought, in order to reelaborate them within the framework of a dynamic relationship." The selections, however, are breathtaking—300 color illustrations, from Praxiteles to Pollock—and they grant the text the freedom to delve into their complex mysteries. Eco's categories for doing so (e.g., "Poets and Impossible Loves") and his historical breadth in elaborating them are creative and impressive respectively. Long quotations ranging from Plotinus and Petrarch to Xenophon and Zola allow each era to speak for itself, while Eco links them with his own epoch-leaping connections. Seen in terms of a timeless debate on the form and meaning of beauty, masterpieces like Titian's Sacred and Profane Loveor Cranach's Venus with Cupid Stealing Honey seem, if possible, even more immediate, and related to our own amorous profanities and thefts.

From Booklist
Given the sophistication of Eco's celebrated novels, the most recent being Baudolino (2002), and his scholarly work in semiotics, readers will expect his "review of ideas of Beauty over the centuries," as he so modestly characterizes this brimming and provocative volume, to be at once intellectually elaborate and great fun, and, indeed, it is. Focused primarily on the human form as depicted in works of art, beginning with the ancient Greeks and striding confidently into the age of the machine; elegantly designed and, yes, beautifully illustrated, Eco's mapping of our ever-changing definition of beauty draws on philosophy, theology, poetry, and science as he tracks beauty's permutations under the influence of ideas, mysticism, social upheaval, economics, politics, and technological innovation. A lover of language as well as image, Eco showcases literary beauty in the clarion writings he so judiciously excerpts. Erudite and ardent, Eco contemplates the complex relationship between nature and art, beauty and love, and vigorously explicates depictions of ugliness, without which our sense of beauty would not exist. An historical view of what moves "the eye of the beholder".
By David J. Gannon
Dostoyevsky once observed that "beauty is the battlefield where God and the devil war for the soul of man". In History of Beauty Umberto Eco provides an historical context to how that battlefield has changed over the past 3000 years or so.

This is a sumptuous, unusually high quality coffee table book. While its over 400 photographs are extremely engaging, the introductions and essays Eco provides are absorbing and just as illuminating as the pictures. Eco lists himself as editor, but that is false modesty. His writing here is excellent, erudite and informative and provides a lot of food for thought as one peruses the visuals.

As is to be expected from Eco, his essays cite philosopher that run the gamut from Aristotle and Plato through to Xenophon (though I did not see any Dostoyevsky references though that dark soul was seemingly compulsive about the mesmerizing qualities of beauty) and thusly provide an all encompassing review of differing concepts of what is beautiful by both geographically and chronologically.

This is a rich, beautiful book that will please the dedicated reader as well as the casual surfer who might flip through it.

If you want to upgrade the ambiance of your coffee table, this would be an excellent choice.

Thinking made clear
By John Seybold
Only Umberto Eco could write a book that defines beauty through the ages of western culture as this one does. He looks at the great contemporary writers for insight into the great contemprary artists. Umberto brings Plato to the front to explain early Greek art, and brings in Hume to explain humanist style. It is a classical book that should be used in colleges to not only introduce people to art but to thinking about art and words. The color plates are wonderful. What I wish is that the Italian CDrom was available in English. One can see from the style used that this book was a great interactive CDrom.

Reading Umberto's insights and looking at great art..what a wonderful way to spend a morning at starbucks!

Excellent introduction to the Aesthetics of Beauty
By Greg
Umberto Eco is one of the world's leading experts on aesthetics and art, as well as being an outstanding novelist in his own right.

This work on the history of beauty is aimed at a general audience rather than a specialised one, and as such it abounds more in beautiful works of art and illustrations rather than scholarly analysis of art itself. However, it still contains an excellent history of the idea of beauty, and how artists through the ages have tried to implement somewhat abstract ideas, while philosophers and theologians have abstracted from art to apply artistic and creative terms to entities such as Platonic Forms or God.

One of the most interesting developments in the history of beauty was the identification of beauty with reality as it was in itself. Platonists identified the beautiful with the Good or the One, and Christians planted these ideas onto God. The notion that God was the most beautiful entity that existed, that God could be represented in art, and also that the cosmos in many ways is God's work of Art, expressed itself in many great works of art, poetry and architecture in the medieval period.

With the Renaissance, the concept of beauty became more grounded in human and earthly realities, and one sees far more focus on the beauty of material objects, nature, and people, as they are rather than their ideal nature. Art becomes more and more focused on the material world until the 20th century when in the era of late capitalism, art itself has become a consumable commodity and the chief virtue of art seems to be to cause pleasant feelings to arise in the consumer (something Andy Warhol satirises a lot in his works of art). Yet even in this period, artists still manage to create works of creative beauty which capture both the beautiful and the ugly, as we now see them.

This work is essential reading for anyone curious about Art and its history, and its relation to abstract ideas.

Graduates in geology, geochemistry and geophysics will find this volume in the Geoscience Texts series a valuable reference text. The book begins by describing the known composition of the present upper crust, then deals with possible compositions for the total crusts and the inferred composition of the lower crust. The question of the uniformity of crustal composition throughout geological time is discussed. The rate of growth of the crust through time is assessed, and the effects of the extraction of the crust on mantle compositions are considered. Finally, the question of early pre-geological crusts on the Earth is debated, and comparisons are given with crusts on the Moon, Mercury, Mars, Venus and the Galilean Satellites.

An Excellent Historical Survey of Elements in Earth Materials
By Jan Peczkis
This work centers on the evolution of the Earth from a geochemical perspective. For instance, the inferred composition of the Archean crust is given. The authors compare their crustal-growth curves with those of several other authors.

Owing to its repeated comprehensive listing of the REEs, the title of this book could as well be "The Rare Earth Elements in Earth History and in Present-Day Earth Materials". Tabulation of the REEs, and other trace elements, is given for: the upper continental crust (p. 46), bulk continental crust (p. 67), inferred lower continental crust (p. 92), oceanic crust (p. 274), etc. There is also data on the average REE contents of common igneous and metamorphic minerals (pp. 35-37), greywackes (p. 126), shales, etc.

The emergence of the first continents
By Mr. Danglot Claude
The Continental Crust: its Composition and Evolution is a 1985 dated book. I was particularly interested by the chapter dealing with the "Archean Crust" and the discussion about the basement of greenstone belts, and the emergence of new continents. Because it is a 300 pages book, I have not read all the book but it seems to be very interesting. It is worth of its low cost.

History Lessons: A Memoir of Madness, Memory, and the Brain, by Clifton Crais

An acclaimed scholar tackles his greatest historical puzzle yet―his own abused past and tortured memory

Born in Louisiana to a soon-to-be absent father and an alcoholic mother―who tried to drown him in a bathtub when he was three―Clifton Crais spent his childhood perched beside his mother on a too-tall bar stool, living with relatives too old or infirmed to care for him, or rambling on his own through New Orleans, a city both haunted and created by memory.

Indeed, it is memory―both elusive and essential―that forms the center of Crais’s beautifully rendered memoir History Lessons. In an effort to restore his own, Crais brings the tools of his formal training as a historian to bear on himself and his family. He interviews his sisters and his mother, revisits childhood homes and pores over documentary evidence: plane tickets, postmarks, court and medical records, crumbling photo albums. Probing family lore, pushing past silences and exhuming long-buried family secrets, he arrives, ultimately, at the deepest reaches of the brain. Crais examines the science of memory and forgetting, from the ways in which experience shapes the developing brain to the mechanisms that cause the chronic childhood amnesia―the most common and least understood form of amnesia―from which he suffers.

Part memoir, part narrative science and part historical detective story, History Lessons is a provocative, exquisitely crafted investigation into what it means to be human.

Review
“Writers such as Crais are bringing us one step closer to seeing the conscious mind within the living brain by mixing the familiar tools of memoir with neuroscience. In History Lessons, he re-collects, in a very literal sense, his childhood
” (Cara Parks - The Nation)

“[P]oetic passages combine with Crais’ impish humor to make reading History Lessons a weirdly pleasant sensation. . . .In History Lessons, there is no self-pity; no easy resolution . . . ‘Forgetting is a necessary condition of living,’ he concedes, although, by serving history and the arts, we continue in the telling.” (Atlanta Journal Constitution)

“[P]acks an emotional wallop” (Publishers Weekly)

“This memoir of anguish and struggle is a story of remarkable strength and unlikely, inexplicable resilience.” (Kirkus)

“In this extraordinary work, Clifton Crais deploys his skills as a historian to attempt to overcome his amnesia concerning a traumatic childhood, plagued by an alcoholic mother and a largely neglectful father. His account of his journey into his personal past offers profound insights into the relationship between history and memory, interwoven with new understandings of how memory works, both neurologically and socially, derived from advances in the science of memory. Beautifully written, History Lessons offers valuable insights into the relationship between history and memory, a topic of enormous current controversy among historians. In addition to its contributions to this debate, it offers a highly readable and largely triumphant tale of a young boy who made his way in the world to become a major historian of the travails of others, using the memory of his own childhood wounds to arrive at a deeper understanding of the ‘wounds of the past.’” (Gabrielle M. Spiegel, Krieger-Eisenhower Professor of History, Johns Hopkins University)

“Magnificent . . . A searing, deeply moving work.” (Los Angeles Times)

“Well-written and fascinating.” (Publishers Weekly STARRED REVIEW)

“A splendid book that bolsters a literary memoir with the neuroscience of memory, History Lessons beautifully evokes class, race, and loss in a way utterly nique to New Orleans.” (Dan Baum, bestselling author of Nine Lives: Death and Life in New Orleans)

About the Author
Clifton Crais is Professor of History and Director of the Institute of African Studies at Emory University, where he teaches courses on history, violence, and memory.  He holds a doctorate from The Johns Hopkins University. A compelling memoir and much more
By Sita Ranchod
In this beautifully written memoir Clifton Crais skillfully intertwines the tools of an academic historian and advances in neuroscience with his own struggles to come to terms with his difficult and disjointed childhood.

Drawing on the skills of his craft, Crais discovers that his family’s narrative of past splendor as descendants of “good, pure, French stock” living among New Orleans Creole elite on Esplanade Avenue leaves out more humble beginnings, sugar fortunes made and lost, miscegenation and lives lived “amongst the blacks, prostitutes, street musicians, dockworkers, gamblers and petty crooks.” These historical revisions frame his Aunt Cecile’s madness and his mother’s profound sense of disappointment and loss. For Crais and his siblings, poverty and neglect take a heavy toll in the form of depression, substance abuse and broken relationships. Against all odds, Crais achieves both personal and professional success. In this sense, History Lessons is a captivating story of struggle and triumph which is reason enough to read it.

But History Lessons is much more. Drawing on contemporary debates within history and advances in neuroscience, Crais honestly and poignantly conveys his own struggles to remember and reconstruct his painful past. Born at a time when his parents’ marriage was disintegrating, Crais drifts through childhood moving sporadically between New Orleans, Texas, California, Tunisia and Maryland in the care of various relatives - his mother and grandmother, his father and a succession of wives, his older sister and her family. Often on the edge of fending for himself, as a child he yearns to be cared for and wanted. He struggles to remember the facts, yet has clarity on the emotions he experienced. Despite his success, Crais remains haunted by his early life. Through his elegant prose Crais poignantly conveys the complexities of memory – grappling with what is real and what is imaged, how emotions and senses telescope the past into the present, and the glaring silences around which stories are told.

History Lessons provoked me to think about my own history and the stories we all tell about our lives. They are likely more complicated, more fragile, and more elusive than we realize. I highly recommend History Lessons.

A Fantastic Read
By Peter Brown
Written with elegance, this is a heartbreaking story of poverty, childhood, and a historian's quest to discover a personal past. Craig's uses his journey to clearly describe the very human neurobiology of memory making and ultimately the production of history. I could not put this book down.

Painfully relevant
By bootstraps
Beautifully written, thoughtful but not candy coated. unsettling familiar events. Lessons, grievances, things never quite clear nearly come to light, understanding of the need to make sense of that which makes no sense.

The Farmerfield Mission: A Christian Community in South Africa, 1838-2008, by Fiona Vernal

In The Famerfield Mission, Fiona Vernal recounts the history of an African Christian community on South Africa's troubled Eastern Cape frontier. Forged in the secular world of war, violence, and colonial dispossession and subjected to grand evangelical aspirations and social engineering, Farmerfield's heterogeneous mix of former slaves and displaced Africans from polities beyond the borders of the Cape Colony entered the powerful ideological arena of anti-slavery humanitarianism and evangelicalism. As a farm, an African residential site amid a white community, and a Christian mission on a violent frontier, Farmerfield was at once a space, a place, and an idea that Africans, missionaries, whites, and colonial authorities competed to mold according to their own visions.

Founded in 1838 and destroyed by the apartheid government in 1962, Farmerfield's residents struggled over the meaning and content of a civilized, Christianized lifestyle, deploying a range of tactics from negotiation and dissimulation to deference and defiance. In the process, they vernacularized Christianity, endured the ravages of colonialism and apartheid, used their historical connections to the Methodist Church and South Africa's land reform legislation to regain land, and launched the Farmerfield experiment anew, amid new debates about the meaning of post-apartheid land access and citizenship. Farmerfield's propitious rise, protracted, frustrating decline and fledgling reincarnation reflect epochal chapters in South Africa's colonial, apartheid, and post-apartheid history as Africans attempted to define the terms of their cultural autonomy and economic independence.

Review

"This case study of the Farmerfield Mission deepens our understanding of the complex forces that belonged with nineteenth century missions and colonial rule in South Africa. Fiona Vernal has shown how it was not only mission policy and colonial politics that defined the transmission and local appropriation of Christianity but also African responses and agency. The shifts and prevarications of mission policy were as much a response to colonial and apartheid measures as they were to African realities. It is, indeed, the achievement of the book that it provides a persuasive rationale for the emergence of the African voice in historical reconstruction and interpretation, often against the odds. The book should command the attention of students of the subject."--Lamin Sanneh, author of Disciples of All Nations: Pillars of World Christianity

"The Farmerfield Mission illuminates part of the wide world of rural self-rule in nineteenth-century South Africa, which is much more varied than we had thought, and which has shaped the present in profound ways. Tracing a forgotten multi-ethnic community of Christian African peasants from the nineteenth century, past their destruction, to the politics of the present, Vernal uncovers a lost historical dimension and a lost potentiality for South Africa."--Paul S. Landau, author of Popular Politics in the History of South Africa, 1400 to 1948

"Established in response to African initiative, situated in an area seen by the colonists as being 'white,' rather than a rural or urban 'location,' Farmerfield represents 'a new experiment in Methodist evangelical strategy: an exclusive African peasant community as the embodiment of a vital African Christianity and mature civilization.' This well-written and engaging account will appeal to students and researchers of mission history, and the broader history of the Eastern Cape."--Alan Kirkaldy, author of Capturing the Soul: The Vhavenda and the Missionaries, 1870-1900
