Clearly written, the text begins with Bryan growing up in the Bronx during the Depression, taking free WPA art classes and helping create clothing and kites from scrap materials. It follows him through public school, Sunday school, Cooper Union art education, army service during World War II, and the lifelong development of his talents as an artist. Though he eventually found his way to children’s book illustration, he has continued to work in media such as stained-glass design, found-object puppet making, and traditional painting. Photos of Bryan’s world and reproductions of his often bright-hued and inherently vibrant artworks appear on every page, sometimes overlapping each other, sometimes overlaid with text. They infuse the entire presentation with energy, color, and joy. Family LIfe and Creativity

I have just read Ashley Bryan's new autobiography WORDS FOR MY LIFE SONG. As a librarian and teacher, as well as mother and grandmother, I have known his work for years. I have heard him lecture and chant poetry. I have known he was a versatile and ever-growing artist. But this book makes clear the kind of seedbed in which he grew. His parents were immigrants from the island of Antigua, who settled in the Bronx. They were creative in their own special ways - his mother with flowers and song; his father with birds. Besides their own six children, they raised various nieces and nephews. They encouraged their children to be creative in whatever way they chose - with music or art. Ashley was drawing and painting from his earliest years. He also gives credit to classes he and his siblings were able to take through the government programs begun in the Depression, such as the WPA. He learned very early to make art with found objects, which he has continued to do throughout his career. Bible stories and a church also played a strong role in his growing up. Because he was so bright and talented, he was able to get scholarships to outstanding educational institutions, though he did come up against some racial walls. When he was drafted into the Army during World War II, he always carried his sketch pad and pencils with him and drew whenever he could. He took art lessons in the countries where he was stationed. He took part in the Normandy invasion but managed to survive the fighting and keep drawing, even in the trenches. After the war he began to work at illustrating books and continuing his education. He also helped raise his sister's children. We now know him through his illustrations in countless children's books and through his lectures and performances of poetry and song. He has also taught at Dartmouth and other institutions.

From an early stage of his career, he has known Maine as a special place for artists and eventually found his own place on Little Cranberry Island. Part of this book consists of photographs of Bryan living on and celebrating the island.

The total effect of this book is of a family and man just bursting with creativity and sharing it with their fellow creatures. It also gives credit to American institutions which have been instrumental in encouraging talent. It makes the reader proud of what can happen in America when it is at its best.

You will absolutely fall in love with Ashley Bryan, a kind, gentle and extraordinarily talented man!

Ashley's arms are spread wide, welcoming you into his world on Little Cranberry Island, his life, his painting and into his heart. He'll give you a bit of his soul if you read carefully. He grew up in the Bronx surrounded by his three brothers, two sisters, loving parents and a few "extra special" surprise cousins. It was a vibrant home filled with song, dance, games, birds ... it was a nurturing environment for a budding artist. He wasn't born with a brush in his hands, but he should have been.

As a child Ashley was probably unaware of prejudice, but his father experienced the "prevailing discrimination that limited job opportunities for colored people." He later would learn that opportunity had to be chased down and wouldn't come to him if he walked away. He took the entrance exam to Cooper Union School of Art and Engineering," a school that his art teachers assured him that did "not see [him] there." They never saw his color, but rejoiced in his art and accepted him. In this book you will read the story of a gentle, enormously talented man who has brought his world to you in many books you have read. Ashley invites you to read about his life, a life well spent, one that has given us a new perspective on life.

I loved the gentle flow of the book that conveyed the spirit of a man you will fall in love with and would love to meet, least ways on the pages of his books. His story drifts seamlessly to his past and gives vignettes of his present day life on Cranberry Island. The poetic flow is very appealing. The art, his art, is magnificent and the photographs are very inviting. It is a wonderful world, but you can make it even better by inviting "Ashley Bryan" into yours and onto your book shelves!

Wonderful insight into Ashley Bryan

I totally agree with Isabel D. whose review is below. Ashley Bryan is one of the most kind and gentle artist/storyteller/poets that I have ever met. At the recent ALA (American Library Association) conference in Washington, DC, he was walking through the vendor floor and graciously took a few moments to chat with me as a librarian from Maine. His readings and artwork convey the joy of words and color that typify Ashley Bryan. I am thankful for knowing, and for having heard, Ashley Bryan.

Gregg Shorthand

I bought it for nostalgic reasons. I once knew Gregg shorthand and still used some of the phrases (words) in taking notes at meetings and in personal letters or cards (to my sister who also knew shorthand.) It is amazing how much I remembered and keep looking at it to pick up more and more words I should and can be using.

Great refresher!

I took short hand when I was in high school and don't remember a lot of it. As a personal project I wanted to renew my short hand skills. The book is self-explanatory, and moves fairly quickly. At times, it moves too quickly in teaching symbols for sounds. However, you do go at your own pace which makes it easier.

If you're new to short hand, you might struggle a bit more than if you've had experience with it.

Wealth of Resources

Small business owners are experts at providing a product or service, but that doesn't mean they are experts at * marketing * their businesses. As a member of a co-working organization, and as a social media marketer, I meet small- to mid-size business owners and solopreneurs on a regular basis who are confused by all of the choices available to them to market their businesses. They are intimidated and overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information, and the time and monetary costs associated with getting new customers.

In her book, Small Business Marketing Kit for Dummies, Barbara Findlay Schenck has done a great job of laying out the different marketing options available to small business owners in a simple, clear manner.

Because of the breadth of information included, I would highly recommend this book to people who are considering opening a business, people in startups, business owners who want to grow but have limited insight into what that requires, entrepreneurs and students. Even seasoned marketers will pick up some new strategies. I would also recommend this book to anyone considering hiring a marketing or advertising agency to learn the buzzwords and gain realistic expectations of what their service provider should be able to do (and not do).

She starts by getting the mindset right so business owners will see through their customers' eyes to get the message right. This is a step many business owners fail to take, and when it they do, it makes them seem out of touch. So, +1 to the author for touching on this crucial insight first. I would encourage all business owners to read that part thoroughly and not gloss over it. Getting the message right comes first, promoting it comes second.

The rest of the book is a buffet of advertising, media buying (including billboards and outdoor ads which I almost never see in small business marketing publications), public relations, sales presentation information and everything in between. It also gives a good amount of information on social media and mobile marketing (my personal favorites). There are some sections on branding (choosing a business name, etc.) and how to get a website set up, whether to host it yourself or use a free service, pros and cons of each, supervising a web developer, etc. She does a really good job of covering technical subjects in a non-techie manner, which is so important for small business owners. There are also sections on online directories, and calculating market share.

She presents the information in a very clear, simple (but not simplistic) manner. I learned a lot from the book and will be implementing what I have learned.

One thing I have found in my day-to-day interactions with business owners is that no marketers do everything, so they can only recommend strategies from their own toolboxes. The real beauty of this book in my humble opinion is that, in addition to her own expansive business knowledge, the author has consulted experts in each of the marketing disciplines included in the book to help business owners decide if a particular marketing strategy or channel is right for them.

There is also a bonus CD with worksheets, checklists and charts that are organized by book chapter, plus a list of forms. Many of these checklists contain advice from subject matter experts, and include advice on how to hire an agency, tracking forms for social media and a blog editorial calendar, model release forms, checklists for radio and television advertising, LinkedIn tips, how to write an elevator pitch, what to include on a website landing page, what to say by phone or email to introduce your business, and many more. Usually, you would have to hire and pay multiple consultants to get a stack of forms like this, and I know because I have done it! Buying this book is much cheaper.

I judge the value of an information product in this manner: If I learn one new thing that I didn't know before or find a new way to increase my productivity that will enable me to make a sale that will be equal to or greater than the cost of the book, then the book is worth it. This book is more than worth it. Thank you, Barbara Findlay Schenk, I will be recommending your book to my clients and colleagues. Normally hate "Dummies" books but...

I've been on a reading binge trying to get up to speed on marketing for my small business, and this is just one of the texts I've gotten to help my learning curve. With this being the 3rd edition (meaning there have been a lot of edits and customer requests have been included and it's a obviously been a successful title or there wouldn't have been a 3rd edition) and a compilation of worksheets, checklists, etc. on an attached CD making it even more valuable than a stand-alone text.

This is absolutely another must-read.

Low-risk, high-reward investment for small business owners

I shared this book with four friends, who are small business owners, each looking to improve their marketing strategies. They own businesses in different industries - restaurant, education, beauty and landscaping services - but shared a similar problem, not one had the capital to sign a five-figure contract with a professional marketing firm.

According to the Census Bureau, about three quarters of all U.S. business firms have no payroll; most are self-employed persons operating unincorporated businesses. Hence, the audience for author Barbara Findlay Schenck's book is undeniable as there are more than 20 million companies that fit into the small business category.

Over the course of six months, each of my friends reported back to me that the Small Business Marketing Kit For Dummies was a useful resource. We discussed the challenges and opportunities each business faced. As limiting as small budgets are they also spur creativity and a willingness to try anything.

We talked about the advice and direction provided in Schenck's book. The following highlights came from my conversations with the four small business owners.

Chapter 1: Framing the Marketing Process

Schenck lists four reasons why her book is for small businesses with comparatively micro-budget marketing resources. The four differences - dollar, staffing, creative and strategic - are why small businesses can't approach marketing in the same way international companies can.

Chapter 3: Seeing Your Product through Your Customers' Eyes

"When sales are down or customers seem dissatisfied, small businesses turn too quickly to their pricing in their search for a quick-fix solution."

Chapter 6: Taking Stock of Your Business Image

"Many businesses boast that their signage is their most effective means of attracting first-time visitors. But before banking on your sign to draw people in, realize that when people respond only to your signage, they're making spur-of-the-moment, drop-in visits - perhaps at a time when they're short on both time and money. Instead work to achieve destination visits by making impressions and cultivating interest well in advance of prospects noticing your sign and walking through your door."

Chapter 7: Forging Your Brand
* A brand is a set of beliefs. It's a promise customers believe.
* A brand isn't a logo. A logo is a symbol that identifies a brand. When people see your logo or hear your name, a set of images arises. Those images define your brand in their minds.

Chapter 9: Hiring Help When You Need It

When to bring in marketing experts
* When you're creating a long-life marketing piece;
* When doing your own marketing takes you or your staff away from more profitable activities;
* When the budget for a single marketing effort exceeds $10,000;
* When your annual budget for marketing communications reaches $50,000.

Chapter 13: Creating and Placing Print and Outdoor Ads
* "...four out of ten people say they still get their news from newspapers. Your mom is one of them, which supports this conclusion: You better know your customers before you abandon traditional advertising altogether..."
* "If your target audience is younger - especially the 18 to 29 age group - you're pretty safe ruling out traditional newspapers in favor of messages delivered via web-connected devices and TV.

I would have liked to see one chapter dedicated to guerrilla marketing, an advertising strategy that utilizes low-cost, unconventional approaches that can be tailored to most small businesses. Describing what guerrilla marketing is easiest by identifying what it is not, i.e. traditional media (radio, print or TV advertising). Since guerrilla marketing is risky, it is not appropriate for business owners who can't step outside their comfort zone.

Successful guerrilla marketing is memorable, newsworthy and "sticky," and is sometimes referred to as both stealth marketing and extreme marketing. Time, energy and imagination are the primary resources in place of budget. Guerrilla marketing involves "brand activation that isn't 100 percent permitted by the city, event or establishment," according to Adam Salacuse, Founder and President of ALT TERRAIN, which plans and executes "successful guerrilla marketing, wild posting and one-of-a-kind street marketing concepts."

Overall, Small Business Marketing Kit for Dummies offers solid advice that is easy to read and implement. It is a low-risk, high-reward investment for small business owners.

Short story by Stephen Crane, published serially in Collier's Weekly (Nov. 26-Dec. 3, 1898), and then in the collection The Monster and Other Stories (1899). Combining symbolic imagery with naturalistic detail, it is an existential tale about human vanities and delusions. As the story opens, three visitors find shelter from a blizzard at Pat Scully's hotel in Fort Romper, Neb.: a nervous New Yorker known as the Swede, a rambunctious Westerner named Bill, and a reserved Easterner called Mr. Blanc. The Swede becomes increasingly drunk, defensive, and reckless. He beats Scully's son, Johnnie, in a fight after accusing him of cheating at cards. When the Swede accosts a patron of a bar, he is stabbed and killed. The story ends ambiguously at a point several months later, when timid Mr. Blanc confesses to Bill that he feels somewhat responsible for the Swede's death because he failed to act when he saw that Johnnie was indeed cheating at cards. -- The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature

About the Author
American author Stephen Crane began writing early in life, and was already a published author by the age of sixteen. Among Crane s best known works are Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, which is considered to be the first literary work in the early American tradition of Naturalism, a literary movement marked by detailed realism and the acknowledgement of social conditions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and The Red Badge of Courage, which was influenced by his own experiences in military school and personal contact with Civil-War veterans. Crane died in 1900 at the age twenty-eight of tuberculosis, but had a significant and lasting impact on twentieth-century literature, influencing early modernist writers such as Ernest Hemingway.

The Way It Is

Crane, Stephen. The Blue Hotel

Stephen Crane’s long short story is a much anthologised item, it being typical of his masculine focussed social Darwinism, or survival of the fittest philosophy. Here, a character known simply as The Swede is the focus of the five major players in the story, set in an isolated settlement in The Blue Hotel in Fort Romper, Nebraska. Life is tough in winter in Romper and a man needs all his wits, and probably a handy weapon, simply to survive. The Swede is nervous to the point of hysteria. Pat Scully, the hotel keeper, his son Johnnie, the Easterner and the cowboy are shocked by the Swede’s insistent nervous laughter and his compulsive fear of being murdered. While Scully is out meeting any likely customers from the train, and over a card game, the Swede accuses Johnnie of cheating, which leads to a challenge and a fight outside in the blizzard.

‘Kill him, Johnnie! Kill him!, shouts the cowboy, as the contestants grapple, until finally Johnnie falls. But encouraged by his father he continues, until overpowered at last by the heavier man, and left to ‘the mixture of sympathy and abuse’ of the women. The Swede leaves in triumph for another bar, where he boasts about what he’d done to Scully’s son, but his unwilling audience shun him and his bravado, declining his offer of a drink together. This infuriates the drunken Swede, who threatens a gambler and in a struggle is pierced by a long knife. This ‘citadel of virtue, of virtue, wisdom, power, was pierced as easily as if it had been a melon,’ we are told, and its innocent murderer is, we learn in the final section given the lenient sentence of three years in jail.

There is no moral to the story. Given the setting and the characters it’s a sequence of likely events. Neither the demon drink nor the violence in nature is to blame. Anger, fear, jealousy and the need to impose on others are inescapable. That’s just the way it is.

Good read when flying

Starting to go back and read some of the "masters" to increase my depth and knowledge of writing styles. Short story with an interesting plot line of paranoia and self fulling prophecy at the end. Highly recommend for a quick read on a flight on an hour or more.
