The Commercial Banks try to neutralize the Saving Banks' attempts for equalization.

Of all the books and scripts Mr Waller had written in his lifetime, this is my favorite. The main protagonist is Woods Palmer, a Chicago banker from a family of Chicago bankers who is hired by the largest domestic bank from NYC as the number two man to foil the plot by Savings Banks to pass legislation enabling the Savings to grow beyond their current legal confinement in order to even the playing field with the Commercials.

The book was originally published in 1963 and the plot was a real life hot button issue of the day but with what has happened to this country in the last decade the book is showing its age and may seem a little docile. I believe the book still has relevance and that many people will still enjoy the story.
Besides the main plot, there are many sub plots, twists and turns, that will keep you turning the pages. Palmer is an accomplished banker but one that has lived under the shadow of his strict, old fashion father and must prove to himself that he is not only the equal but better than his father. You will also get to experience his unhappy family life with a wife who cares more for her social circle than her husband, Palmer's new love interest, Palmer's boss who is an old arrogant SOB who has become the leader of the movement to squash the Savings Banks that has been CEO of the largest bank too long and has lost sight of the realities of the day. There are also politicans, wheeler dealers and news people who are looking out for themselves as well.

While Palmer is performing his assigned task with the Savings plot, he discovers his bank, United Bank, is under attack and there is an ingenious plot to take over the bank. His solution to save the bank is also ingenious. While you're reading about the exploits of Woods Palmer you will also have the opportunity to discover the traitors in United Bank that have gone over to the outside interest in taking over the bank.
The characterization of the dozen main characters and an equal number of smaller characters is in-depth and excellent and will give the reader a look into the lives of wealthy people with positions that have influenced our society for decades. You'll see the strengths and weaknesses of these people. The dialog is also good and worthy of the high status and sometimes deviousness of these characters.

Not wanting to give the whole story away, I've just scratched the surface but if you're looking for an involved story dealing with banking on a macro level that includes corporate and personal intrigue then this is worthy of your consideration.

I really like the way the author explains the ins and outs of this complicated financial world while keeping this exciting story going.

How to teach math to community college students

This book has been a tremendous help to me to identify some of the problem areas on my teaching. Mistakes I have made in the past with ideas about why I made them and how to avoid them. I am new to teaching math but not to teaching in general and the thoughts laid out in this book can be applied to most any field of teaching.
I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone teaching in a community college. You have the widest and most difficult range of students in the education business, but they are all there to learn. Do whatever you can to make your efforts effective!
I would love to see much of this material presented in a workshop for adjunct faculty.

A fantastic book for the beginning mathematics teacher

The author's focus is on college teaching, but is also readily applicalbe to high school or other secondary teaching. Chapters include fundamentals such as how to lecture and other pedagogical ideas, to extremely practical items such as writing and grading tests and tutoring. Many ideas are presented for immediate adapting/absorbing into your own teaching framework. Being a high school calculus teacher, I was entertained by the glimpse this book provides of a college or university teaching situation. This book is readily available from the American Mathematical Society at ams.org.

A good basic handbook, with essays that give some big ideas

This book is well worth reading from start to finish for a starting college instructor who hasn't taught in North America before. An instructor who has been educated in North America has experience with standard ways instructors present material and is familiar with the expectations that students have for university courses, and will not benefit as much from reading this book. Much of the material in the book is obvious to someone who is reflective about their teaching and aware while teaching (you should have some feeling for a room, at a minimum to sense from pained faces if the students are not absorbing anything). The essays appended to Krantz's book are mixed but several are well worth reading even by instructors who have taught for years.

I assert that the biggest psychic obstacle to learning is thinking that your level of talent in a subject is fixed like fingerprints. Students should be explicitly told not to feel pride for mastering something with little practice, and should also be explicitly told not to feel shame for doing terribly at something when they first try it. I think it is one reason why students don't work as much as they could on mathematics.

The book seems to me to pose the following dilemma: either an instructor speaks and writes notes on a board that cover the material in the course, or students work in groups and the instructor probes them and gives them targeted help. I have two alternatives. One is tell students what to read in a textbook, so that the instructor might never mention some topics for which the students will nevertheless be responsible. The instructor could then focus just on the harder and more unifying ideas in the subject and repeat them several times. For example, I am certain it would benefit many students in a course on multivariable calculus to present the same proof of the implicit function theorem more than once, to help the students really chew on it. This is certainly how I read, and I don't see why it can't be how I am spoken to.

A second alternative is repetition. My only serious experience of this was in my grade 10 Latin class, in which Magister Parker would have us conjugate verbs and decline nouns aloud. Drill is almost universally unpopular today. For series convergence tests in a first year calculus course, I think that the class saying them aloud would make students feel more personally involved and would help them remember the material better than doing "everyone find a partner" activities. From "Stand and Deliver": "A negative times a negative equals a positive!" I feel like our instinct now is that this is silly and perhaps even demeaning, but I think there is no satisfying reason for this uneasiness and it should be overcome, like a fear of public speaking, applying for a job, or using a locker room shower.

We all claim to care about animals and to regard them as having at least some moral value. We all claim to agree that it’s wrong to inflict “unnecessary” suffering and death on animals and—whatever disagreement we may have about when animal use is necessary—we all agree that the suffering and death of animals cannot be justified by human pleasure, amusement, or convenience. We condemn Michael Vick for dogfighting precisely because we feel strongly that any pleasure that Vick got from this activity could not possibly justify what he did.

So how can we justify the fact that we kill many billions of land animals and fish every year for food? However “humanely” we treat and kill these animals, the amount of animal suffering we cause is staggering. Yet no one maintains that animal foods are necessary for optimal health. Indeed, mounting empirical evidence points to animal foods being detrimental for human health. But however you evaluate that evidence, there can be no serious doubt that we can have excellent health with a vegan diet. There is also broad consensus that animal agriculture is an ecological disaster. Animal agriculture is responsible for water pollution, air pollution, deforestation, soil erosion, inefficient use of plant protein and water, and all sorts of other environmental harms.

The best justification we have for the unimaginable amount of suffering and death that we impose on animals is that they taste good. We enjoy the taste of animal foods. But how is this any different from Michal Vick claiming that his dogfighting operation was justifiable because he enjoyed watching dogs fight? Vick liked sitting around a pit watching animals fight. We enjoy sitting around a summer barbecue pit roasting the corpses of animals who had lives and deaths that were as bad as, if not worse than, Vick’s dogs. What is the difference between Michael Vick and those of us who eat animal foods?

This book shows there is no difference, or at least not any difference that matters morally.

Prof. Gary L. Francione and Prof. Anna Charlton argue that if you think animals matter morally—if you reject the idea that animals are just things—your own beliefs require that you stop eating animal products. There is nothing "extreme" about a vegan diet; what is extreme is the inconsistency between what we say we believe and how we act where animals are concerned.

Many of us are uneasy thinking about the animals who end up on our plates. We may have thought about stopping our consumption of animal products, but there are many excuses that have kept us from doing so. The authors explore the 30+ excuses they have heard as long-time vegans and address each one, showing why these excuses don’t work. Excellent Text on Veganism as a Moral Obligation

In this remarkably clear book, the authors argue persuasively that we don't need to embrace an animal rights position to see that veganism is a moral obligation; all we need to do is to accord animals some moral value. They argue that if animals matter at all and are not merely things, we cannot justify imposing harm on animals if the only benefit is our amusement or pleasure; and they use the case of Michael Vick to show that we all agree with that position. The authors go on to argue that our consuming animals cannot be meaningfully distinguished from what Vick did, in that we consume animal products only because we enjoy the taste as there is no necessity to do so. The authors are longtime vegan advocates who have produced a short and readable book that will equip every animal advocate with the necessary arguments to make *not* being a vegan look extreme!

Not vegan yet? All your "but this, but that", answered!

As a vegan of 27 years for ethical reasons, i.e., because of the wish not to harm animals for trivial reasons, such as taste preferences, I believed I had heard all the arguments well-meaning meat eaters bring forth. I say "well-meaning" meat eaters because if somebody does not care about animals, there is no argument that would convince that person to stop eating animals.
This book starts from the same premise: do you care about animals? If yes, then you should try to become vegan. If not, skip it. Not all well-meaning meat eaters use all of the reasons rebutted in this book, but a plethora of anti-animal trolls has provided us with lots of "buts". You have heard some: but what about plants, but what about predators, but what about evolution, but what about this holy book, but what about protein, but what about cheese, but, but, but. If you cling to one of those buts against your love or pity or concern for animals, this book will help you make the transition to a vegan diet and bring peace to your conscience.
If you are already vegan, with non vegan friends and relatives, this book will answer all their "buts", so at least you will not have to keep repeating yourself! Just find their favorite "but" reason in this book and pull the answer out, a couple of pages long or less. Those who are able to abandon irrational or conflicting beliefs and choices (love animals but eat them), will be able to make the transition to a vegan diet. The others will know that their "but" is rebutted and may be they will stop bring it out every time they see you!

This book makes me a better Vegan!

I purchased this book and it answered every question I had been struggling with. Especially on how to communicate with those in my life who defend eating animals.
I became vegan only about six months ago and to me it is how I should have lived the first 53 years of my life. I have never eaten and felt better and I am always surprised on how everyone reacts around me. Sometimes I just don`t know how to respond at all, or don`t know how to respond correctly.
I want to be a kind and gentle vegan and this book is truly making it better for me.
