Fabulous Story

I found this book emotional and moving and such a great read from start to finish MS Hewitt has taken two people who have suffered in the past on a journey to sunshine at the end it is a rocky path but the epilogue is so good.

Sierra Rocci has led a childhood of emotional and physical abuse from a strong willed father who also controlled her mother but her mother was in love and no matter what Sierra said her mother would not listen so when her father found someone that he felt Sierra should marry at the age of nineteen Sierra agrees to get away from her father. But Sierra cannot go through with it and jilts Marco at the alter and takes off to start a new life in London never to return to Palermo until the reading of her father's will where she again meets the man she jilted and he is angry and wants answers Sierra is determined to be strong but can she resist this man.

Marco Ferranti had been an orphan he had a tough childhood but worked his way up from bellboy at one of the Rocci hotels in Palermo when he is taken under the wing of none other than the owner Arturo Rocci he treats him like a son and Marco works his way up to second in charge and is more than happy to meet his daughter the beautiful Sierra yes marriage to Sierra will be good it won't be a love match Marco doesn't need that everyone he has ever loved has left him but they will be friends and have a good family life, so when Sierra jilts him he is left shocked and angry but also wanting answers why?

Seven years later when they meet again Sierra is still beautiful but has grown and matured she seems stronger but Marco still wants answers and when Arturo leaves everything to Marco Sierra is not surprised at all and after an evening spent together this leaves them both wanting more but Sierra goes back to London. But when a new hotel is opening in New York Marco needs Sierra to help with the opening she agrees reluctantly. I can highly recommend this book it is a sizzling sensual journey that opens up a lot of dark secrets and makes them both realize they need to be open and honest for love to bloom and the sunshine at the end of the journey to shine and shine it does this one had me smiling and shedding a few tears. This really is a great story

Sierra Rocci lived a life of her father only wanted her and her mother (his wife) when he needed them for show and to perform. Her mother loved her father but Sierra could not have that kind of love for her marriage. She had no idea what a real couple was like and she had a lonely childhood and being wanted basically for show. Then her father would call her princess and pretend as if she was his life and joy. Her father was the business mogul for hotels. He had chosen his prodigy Marco Ferranti to marry his daughter. The night before the wedding he was talking with Marco and told him that you know women have their senseless ideas and you need to keep them in line. Marco said I know how to keep Sierra in line. Sierra overheard and thought that Marco was just like her father. She could not go through with the wedding. Thankfully her mother helped her get away. Her mother had money tucked away and a friend that she could go far away and that she would help her. She handed Sierra the envelope and name and address and kissed her goodbye.
Now seven years later and both her parents had passed away and the will for her father needed her to be present. Everything but 2 things was given to Marco. Before she left again she went to say goodbye to her mother’s grave. But Marco found her there feeling she was trespassing on his property. He of course was not happy that she had left him standing and waiting at the church on what should have been their wedding day. He felt she had rejected him in the same way his own father had and his own mother had.
Can there ever be hope for these two? He needs her help to cut the ribbon for the opening of a brand new hotel and would she agree to come and do it. The board stated that there had to be a Rocci present at the opening.
Kate Hewitt is a wonderful author. I enjoyed her writing very much and the entire story was suspenseful and fast moving. It really was a true love story between Sierra and Marco. This is one book I know you will enjoy!

Philip Dawson developed his interest in merchant and passenger ships and shipping in early childhood and has continued to follow the rise of commercial shipping, taking particular interest in its design and operation. He started writing on shipping and hip design in the early 1980s, and has since embarked on a second career as a freelance writer, specializing in maritime and transport subjects as well as architectural and industrial design. He is author of British Superliners of the Sixties: A Design Appreciation of Oriana, Canberra and QE2 and the highly successful tribute to the P&O cruise liner Canberra: In the Wake of a Legend. A regular contributing editor for a number of specialist and professional publications in the transport and design fields, Dawson is also research co-ordinator for the Canadian Design Exchange in Toronto.

VERY SPECIFIC INFORMATION

Mr. Dawson's book is extremely interesting if one is interested in the development of passenger ships. The evolution of their design from liners to cruise ships is covered in much detail. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to understand or 'see' the details described without having the deckplans of each and every ship mentioned. Mr. Dawson's excellent drawings are shown in such a small scale that even the text on them cannot be read. This way a lot of useful information is lost.
Nevertheless, it is an excellent book for those interested in ship design but it is not a picture book for the ship-lover.

Excellent description of Cruise ship design

A very well researched and interestingly written description of how cruise ships have evolved. While another reviewer is correct that some of the illustrations have one reaching for a magnifying glass, there isn't really a way round showing illustrations like this in a standard format book - and it is better to have them than not. Highly recommended.

Best Book Ever

I read and went over this book a bit when I found it hidden in Freedom of the Seas's library. For all the people interested in the design of ships like myself this book is a must read, it is very detailed and Mr. Dawson put's the information in a very clear way. The book has many illustrations which shows you much of what he wrote about. Unfortunately, the book has become too expensive for me to purchase but when prices drop I'll get my hands on a copy.

I truly enjoyed this story

I truly enjoyed this story. A female that speaks her own mind capturing a Fae Lord. Unheard of when so many vied to capture a Lord for the simple reason their DNA matched and their lives would be secured by producing a child. So who would you consider barbaric?

Eeros and Liana are a good match, and the chemistry is undeniable. Sparks fly and she has learned to maneuver a bit with compromise. Even his guards have warmed to her. However, she holds power that isn't normally associated with humans that Eeros has tried to pass off as channeling from the child she carries. Unfortunately, no one is believing it now. And that sister of her's? What a piece of work?

I loved the ending to this book, but I hope there is more to come with these two. So very entertaining once I was able to actually read it. Hospitals are not always internet friendly.

Sparks surely do fly

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I loved that Liana was not at all happy to give up her education and jobs to become the consort of a fae. In fact, she is pi**ed off. It does help that Eero is Hot, but not hot enough to make Liana forget all the hard work she put into her life to this point. Unfortunately, the human-fae mating does not meet with the approval of all the fae either. The fact that Liana is being forced into the mating does not seem to faze Earl's enemies.
To make the situation even more dangerous, Liana apparently has some power of her own, and she has no idea how to control it. Throw in some family drama and some hot sex and you have the makings of a great story, and plenty of secondary characters to supply sequels! Hopefully these will also give us some catch up details about Eero and Liana. Hint, hint.

Wow hot and steamy romance story. Fae selects his concubine to continue his race since they are having problems with fertility.
Liana is so preoccupied with her life she doesn't stay abreast of the political composition of her government and the Fae.
The Fae provides the government certain needs and the Fae gets a human woman to incubate their children.

Best thing i have read all year!

Nightblade is a wonderful dark fantasy that really does it right. The characters feel realistic and like actual people that react appropriately to sitautions that they are faced with. Often i am put off by alot of fantasy because of the lack of realism within the fantastical world. Nightblade is a perfect blend between the fantastical and the realistic that builds a believeable world with great characters and locations. The journey of the main character, Loren, is in itself a great adventure that would satisfy any reader but on top of that Garrett Robinson builds a rich and fleshed out world along with the story. Locations, characters and societies all add something to the world as they are introduced and really make the world feel more fleshed out and like an actual place. However the greatest part of Nightblade is it's mystery. It keeps you reading and constantly engaged. There is never a dull moment in Nightblade.

Nightblade = AWESOME!

Nightblade was AWESOME! I found out about Garrett Robinson through the SPP Podcast and Sterling and Stone. Nightblade sat in my Kindle for a bit before I had time to devote to reading it. And once I started reading Nightblade, I couldn't put it down. Immediately, Robinson plunges the reader into a series of fast-paced events without sacrificing the initial details for introducing the main characters and their world. Throughout the whole of the book, the action never really stops. The main character, Loren, is constantly driven towards different goals, which adds to the quick pacing. Truly, there are never moments in Nightblade where the reading experience drags. Once I was finished, I kept thinking about the book, and wondering what was going to happen in the sequel! I think that Nightblade deserves to be on the NY Times Bestseller list alongside some of the fantasy books that are receiving a lot of attention. I can't wait until the sequel, Mystic, is released in one volume! I hope that Robinson has several more books planned for the Nightblade series, and I can't wait to check out the Realm Keepers Series him and Z.C. Bolger author!

Nightblade--the New and Improved Version

I'm not fond of starred reviews, so my opinion of NIGHTBLADE boils down to a solid "OK." The characters are serviceable, the writing is decent (and recently subject to subtle tightening at the hands of Mr. Robinson's new colleagues), but I find the whole thing a bit too trope-y, predictable, and sometimes inexplicable to really love. This book, and its successors are great for a quick escape and a tangled romp through a fantasy world, but it leaves me wanting greater complexity.

I live in the beautiful mountains of Lake County, California. I have always loved hiking, camping, rafting and being outdoors. I’ve also been involved in the martial arts for years—I hold a third degree black belt, instruct in a Korean karate system, and have taught self-defense. I am happily married to a romantic man who often inspires me with his thoughtfulness. We have a yours, mine, and ours family, claiming eleven children as our own. I have always written books, forcing my ten sisters to read every word, and now my daughters read and help me edit my manuscripts. It is fun to take all the research I have done on wild animals, raptors, vampires, weather, and volcanoes and put it together with romance.

The Best of the Drake Sisters books

This one has it all. Great action, great romance, and great mystery. The action is fast and full of zest. The romance is hot and sweaty, and the mystery, which is one of Feehan's lesser abilities, is really good. I really enjoyed the book and I was glad it focused on two people and one good mystery. It did not jump around too much.

Joley is back on tour. She is still a bit worried about the reverend, RJ, but all in all the tour is going well. She is receiving hate mail and worries about a stalker. When the incidents start, Nikitin offers the services of Ilya Prakenskii. Joley is leery of her responses to Ilya and tries to keep him at a distance. But when real danger arrives she is glad to have him near.

Ilya is not what he seems. She already knows he has the gifts her family has and he has all of the gifts. He is not ready or willing to open his chamber of secrets to anyone. His life has been a very lonely one and he doesn't really know how to be with anyone. Never in his life has he even thought about a relationship. But Joley takes him apart, bit by bit, and he has found what completes him, he is not willing to let it go.

Someone seems to have it in for Joley, she can't figure why and can only think of a stalker. She has one man murdered, and he is the one she confronted about the underage girls, esspecially the one who is missing. Without her family she is closest to her band and instinctively turns to them for support during this period. However, when Ilya arrives, it is only in his presence she feels completely safe. Why, she can't figure out because she knows he is a cold blooded killer. But still he gives her a sense of safty she has only felt with her family.

I loved this book and I hope the next one will be as good.

Ever since book three of the series, Oceans of Fire, I've waited for the dynamic pairing of Joley Drake and Ilya Prakenskii and Turbulent Sea lived up to my expectations. Ilya was dark, dominant, and completely endearing in his absolute certainty of his love for Joley and his determination to keep her safe. In Turbulent Sea, Ms. Feehan shows a more vulnerable side to Joley, who on the surface seems so strong and carefree, and the contrast only makes her more endearing. The desire brewing between Ilya and Joley was spellbinding and pulled me in from the start. The passionate draw between the two could have carried the story on its own. Yet Ms. Feehan drew me in further with the underlying tenderness between Joley and Ilya as I watched two souls learn to trust one another with their love.

So often I read books where the heroine, though likeable, is simply the mechanism for me to fall in love with the hero. Not so with the Drake sisters. Each sister is a fully-fleshed, realistic character I love for herself alone, and Joley is no exception. Where Ilya is dark and cold with hints of lightness in his soul, Joley is brilliant, vibrant, with just enough darkness to understand Ilya. The two compliment and complete one another, but even before I fell in love with their romance, I had connected to both Ilya and Joley for themselves alone.

If I could ask for one thing to be included in this book, it would be for Ilya to share more of his past with Joley. As it stands, however, the book was fantastic from beginning to end and both the characters and the story felt fully realized. Ms. Feehan does not disappoint - I Joyfully Recommend Turbulent Sea and cannot wait for the youngest Drake sister, Elle, to get her story. Simply fabulous!

Ilya and Joley finally!

I love this book! The chemistry between these two is at times difficult for them both to understand. They often end up hurting each other by doing or saying the wrong thing-how many times does that happen in real life? How can you trust each other if you feel you can't trust yourself? This is the fundamental question that both Ilya and Joley must answer before they can truly commit to each other; and then of course there are Joley's "dark desires". Many who have already have written reviews seem to have a hard time grasping where Christine Feehan was going, wondering if it was possibly a BSDM reference. I have a different idea on the statement she was trying to make. In our society women are, generally speaking, supposed to want a relationship where they take the lead just like the man and decisions are a 50/50 affair, especially if you're a superstar...But what if you had a dark desire for a man who would be dominating and who would take care of you? Who would tell you what to do? Who would cherish you; treat you the way you really want to be treated? Like Joley said to Hannah in "Turbulent Sea", "I despise men weaker than me and hate men who are stronger than me. That pretty much leaves me nowhere to go." I feel that deep inside some women want the man who will take control, be loving and gentle, yet ruthless and arrogant all at the same time; the problem is Joley likes things that she feels she's not supposed to like, she loves Ilya's dominating ways and that's what causes her a problem. Joley has to learn just like all her other sister's to accept herself for who she is. The truth of the matter finally comes to light and Joley learns -In order to truly belong to someone you have to love and accept yourself as you truly are. This was an amazing book! I can barley wait for Jackson and Elle's book! Keep up the good work!

John Brereton (Ph.D., Rutgers University) is a Professor of English, Emeritus, at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Previously he served as Executive Director of the Calderwood Writing Initiative at the Boston Athenæum. About the Author

Andrew Liddle is Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Sussex. He was previously at Imperial College. He is an authority on the theoretical side of astrophysics and cosmology, in particular on the origin and evolution of the structure of the universe.
Jon Loveday is Senior Lecturer in Astronomy at the University of Sussex. He has previously held positions at the University of Chicago, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, and the Australian National University.

The biggest Oxford Companion of them all

The Oxford Companion series contains several splendid volumes devoted to such things as Wine, the Bible, Classical Literature and the American Musical. This Oxford Companion devoted to Cosmology or the scientific study of the birth, growth and ultimate fate of the universe, is without question the largest and most inclusive one of all. Co-authored by Astrophysicist Andrew Liddle, whose previous books include two superb astrophysics and cosmology textbooks: An Introduction to Modern Cosmology and Cosmological Inflation and Large-Scale Structure, the purpose of this Oxford Companion to Cosmology is to provide a coherent one-stop resource containing the latest information on the history and structure of the Cosmos.

The past two decades have seen an explosion in knowledge, but as in every cutting-edge scientific field, the more that we discover the more questions we unearth. The stunning discovery in the late 1990s that the expansion of the universe was accelerating has essentially thrown all of our assumptions into a sorting hat, forcing us to explain the mystery of the missing 96% of the matter we think is contained in the universe. It appears to be undetectable with our present instrumentation. So-called Dark Energy, as seen through the lens of String Theory, has literally redefined our definition of the universe. Our universe is now conceived as a multi-dimensional multiverse or Landscape containing 10^500 universes of utterly different structure and variable physical laws. This makes our uniqueness even less of a pleasant illusion. Some cosmologists are suggesting that a redefinition of gravity, of the speed of light and of Einstein's Relativity are required in order to explain the 'Horizon Problem', the strange flatness and sameness apparent everywhere in the visible universe, even though these far-flung regions have never been in communication with each other. In other words, how can regions that have never been visible to each other "be painted the same color"? Cosmic Inflation, as posited in the 1980s by Alan Guth to explain the 'Horizon Problem', has encountered difficulties that make seeking an alternative explanation a profitable speculative exercise for cosmologists.

Cosmology is in an exciting state of upheaval, and this Companion, with more than 350 relevant entries and 200 photos and diagrams, will make a superb addition to your arsenal of knowledge. What makes it particularly useful is the ability to search for an entry, finding it fairly easily in alphabetical order. Reading a technical article on cosmology often requires that we look up background material. This Companion is superbly well suited for the task. Anyone with an interest in the field will find this volume a welcome addition to their library. Very strongly recommended.

This book puts it together very nicely!

One would not assume that a dictionary approach would work for something as far flung as modern cosmology--But it did so exceptionally well. While avoiding the highly technical, Liddle and Loveday succeed in drawing the landscape in a way that an interested reader cannot miss. And they do it with humor, consistency and clarity. Well done!

A useful explanatory text, but with significant errors

`Three stars' due to its unique concept & reasonable execution. A harder marker would give this book 2 stars, due to several significant errors. See the end of this review, which lists many serious inaccuracies.
Firstly, some positives.....This book bravely sets out to explain cosmology in a series of long encyclopedia-style entries, without excessive 'technical' jargon that is unexplained in the other entries, and with only the odd equation at about the college/high-school/beginning-university level. On these terms, it succeeds in giving the persistent amateur astronomer, the science-oriented member of the general public, the educator, or the beginning physics/astrophysics/astronomy or applied-mathematics student, a good general grounding in the concepts & ideas of cosmology and in the application of physics & math to our observations ( measurements) of the universe. It also simplifies and explains much of the complex history, lore, and `obscure field-specific jargon' of cosmology & astronomy. Furthermore, it provides a "reasonably good or very good"(depending on the area) coverage of current observational data & instruments which are relevant to cosmology, e.g. redshift surveys, large-sky-area imaging Sky Surveys, Space Observatories, very large optical telescopes, astronomical distance measurement techniques, the magnitude system, the Hubble diagram, the Cosmic Microwave Background, etc.

Another strong positive (unusual in a popular-level science book!) is that the authors clearly distinguish between fact and theory and informed speculation. I really like the `agnostic' tone that the authors adopt when they indicate their much less than 100 percent certainty about a concept (!), especially when they write about currently-not-fully-explainable cosmological concepts like the point-sized `singularity' from which the entire universe is said to have arisen and the `dark energy' that is said to influence the rate of cosmic expansion. While accepting the standard Hot Big Bang theory, the authors are not afraid to say that astrophysicists and cosmologists do not fully understand what is going on at the beginning of the universe and that cosmologists do not fully understand the way that the universe and its constituent galaxies have evolved to their current state. The authors also explain some of the wilder speculations in detail (e.g. braneworld cosmology, cosmic strings, 9-dimensional space), and they clearly state when there is no existing evidence for one of these ideas, leaving the reader to draw his/her own conclusions as to whether a specific concept is scientific or theological!

While this book does not explain things fully (which would require a university course in astronomy & cosmology) its main strength is that it provides a broad, extremely detailed, and reasonably-well-written introduction to the concepts and `mindset' of the cosmologists. Full marks to the authors for taking on this demanding teaching task, but it must be said that they are very far from being masters of scientific prose.....their explanations, while giving the reader `a fair idea of how something works', quite often do not generate a Very Clear structural/physical understanding of mathematics & physics concepts. (The old masters of scientific prose, such as Hoyle & Gamow & Asimov, proved that it IS possible to clearly explain Detailed math & physics concepts by means of crystalline-clear prose, thereby bridging the divide between physical and verbal thinking.)

Now for some strong negatives:
It is a pity, given the excellent general concept and workmanlike execution of this encyclopedia, that this book contains a lot of information about galaxies and clusters of galaxies that is downright wrong. The authors make a mess of a good number of simple and essential facts about: galaxy clusters, AGNs, galaxy classification & morphology, stellar populations in galaxies, and galaxy kinematics. Because they don't get some of these intuitively understandable `nuts and bolts' concepts right, it is very difficult to have confidence in the accuracy of their statements about more difficult and abstruse mathematical concepts such as the origin and geometry of the universe! There are many incorrect statements about astronomy in this book. To give a few examples of elementary mistakes made in this book:
- they incorrectly state that the Coma Cluster of Galaxies is the second closest cluster after the Virgo Cluster, conveniently forgetting about the Fornax Cluster, Puppis Cluster, Abell 3627, etc.
- They say that clusters of galaxies are dominated by elliptical galaxies, when in fact many clusters (e.g. the Hercules Cluster) are dominated by spirals. (and I won't even mention their ridiculous Luminous Mass estimate for the Virgo Cluster)
- They incorrectly state that it is the dust component of Earth's atmosphere that scatters and reddens light from the sun and stars.
- They incorrectly define a galaxy group as an association of galaxies, when it is actually a gravitationally-bound structure.
- They incorrectly state that starbursts occur in knots in the outer parts of spiral galaxies, when they actually occur near the center of a galaxy.
- Their discussion of distance modulus includes subtle cosmological corrections such as the K-correction, but the very important `practical' correction for foreground Galactic extinction is left out.
- The section on Galaxy Rotation Curves absurdly states that all spiral galaxies have outer rotation maxima of about 100 km/s, includes a `dodgy' diagram, and states that the redshifted side of a rotating Disk Galaxy necessarily has a larger rotation velocity than the blueshifted side.
- The section on Galaxy Classification repeats many `myths and prejudices' about galaxies that may have been OK in a textbook written in 1960, but which are today known to be incorrect, e.g. that elliptical galaxies do not and cannot contain disks, that all elliptical galaxies are `old' stellar systems, that the bar component of a disk galaxy is in essence an elongated bulge, that E7 galaxies exist (most of them are actually S0 galaxies), that type Sd galaxies have small bulges (they normally have NO bulge!).
- They misinterpret Dr Kenneth C. Freeman's very important (1970) work on the constant or characteristic Surface Brightness of the disks of spiral galaxies, giving the impression that Freeman's conclusion is wrong, when it is actually correct in the statistical sense.
