About the Author

DELENA D. SPANN, MSc, CFE, is employed with the United States Secret Service, Chicago Field Office, where she is assigned to the Electronic and Financial Crimes Task Force.

Spann routinely serves on high-profile financial crimes investigations that include detecting red flags, trends, and anomalies in complex financial transactions. She is frequently called upon as a guest speaker on her expertise in fraud analytics and financial crimes. She is dedicated to the study of white-collar crime.

Spann holds a bachelor's degree in liberal studies from Barry University and a master of science degree in criminal justice administration from Florida International University. She is Board of Regent (Emeritus), an Advisory Board Member, and Higher Education Committee Member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners; a Board of Director of ASIS International Economic Crime Council; Education Task Force Member of the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists; Advisory Board Member at Robert Morris University; Executive Director of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, Greater Chicago Chapter; a Threat Finance Task Force Member of the Association of Certified Financial Crimes Specialists; and Board of Director (Emeritus), Step Women's Network of Chicago. The Power of Fraud Analytics

If you're looking for a book that provides great detail on the implementation of algorithms, scripts and data calculations this may not be your source of reference. However, the author does provide a great overview as it relates to enhancing the readers knowledge of the various fraud tools and how they each correlate with the aspect of fraud analysis and detection. Without specifically endorsing any of the fraud analytic tools mentioned it was well worth the read.

I received my copy of Delena Spann's 'Fraud Analytics' two days ago and poured through it very quickly. The book is very well-written and explores - in plain English - the technical side of the subject. You needn't be a geek, however, to benefit from reading it. It's truly written for a broad audience.

Delena uses very clear explanations and interesting case studies along the way. If you are in the business of preventing, detecting, and investigating financial crimes, this is a MUST-READ book. Highly recommended!

Good Introduction into Fraud Analytics Tools and Techniques!

Fraud Analytics presents an effective approach to fraud detection that discovers unusual patterns, identifies masses of red flags, and aligns trends.

The author is a recognized fraud analysis expert and she leverages her experience to share with readers her approach to detecting fraud. The book provides an introduction to the topic by looking at the schematics of fraud, the evolution of fraud analytics and the analytical process. She then covers using ACL Analytics and CaseWare Analytics (IDEA) two of the most popular tools for conducting data analysis. Fraud Analytics is an easy read and provides many tips for users that will help in identifying fraud red flags. For those interested in expanding their toolbox Delena discusses additional products and vendors including Centrifuge Visual Network Analysis, IBM i2 Analyst Notebook, SAS Visual Analytics, Raytheon’s Visualinks, FICO Insurance Fraud Manager, Palantir Tech and Fiserv’s AML Manager. There is no companion web site for this book so readers will have to perform a Google search for the tools. ACL and IDEA does provide demos of their products that can help in making your tool decision.

Learning may not be sustained, however, unless it is congruent with the larger business context--the organization's strategy and culture and the industry's characteristics. Unfortunately, just as organizations develop learning capabilities, they also suffer from certain learning disabilities. This book outlines common disabilities and the means to overcome them.

Excellent book! I read this book with my 6 ...

Excellent book! I read this book with my 6 year old daughter and she really enjoyed it. There was humor in it, and written at a level that she could understand, without it sounding "baby-ish," or too technical. The take home part is that even though your mom may not be able to do things as she did before, she still loves you the same, and will show her love in other ways. I've had MS for 10 yrs, and would definitely recommend this book to help younger children understand this disease a bit more.

Exactly what I wanted!

As a mom with MS and a 4 year old daughter, I found this book to be really appropriate. I was diagnosed when my daughter was 1. As she's getting older she's noticing subtle differences between me and others, and I want to be honest, educate and share with her without scaring her. I have yet to read the book to her, but after reviewing it myself, I believe it will be the perfect opener to many deeper conversations that will come. Thank you so much to the author! You are filling a much needed void with your work. I appreciate you helping other families.

About the Author

In addition, Professor Allen was the Editor-in- Chief of Computational Linguistics from 1983-1993.

Very good introduction

Natural Language Understanding is a much better introduction to NLP/AI than Speech and Language Processing (2nd Edition). While some amount of jargon is to be expected, NLU keeps it to a relative minimum and is very readable.

I have been working on a knowledge base ("KB") for NLP/NLU for many years and one shortcoming that I see in all books like this is that the authors do not seem to have any direct experience with creating a KB and as a result, they spend a lot of pages, and even chapters, trying to solve problems which are already solved by a good KB design. Many of the middle chapters, as well as the appendix on Logic, fall into this category.

Nevertheless, there is a lot of worthwhile material in this book. Even things which seem off-base to me still raise some issues which will require further thought and analysis. In comparison, I felt like I got nothing at all of value out of the 1000-page Speech and Language Processing book.

Last week, I was looking at the back flap of this book, and I saw something so shocking that I started choking on my pretzels! My wife, after slapping me on the back till I stopped choking, glanced down at the page--filled with bizzare symbols--and said, "How shocking could that page possibly be???"

Well, I was looking at a list abbrieviations of the categories (parts of speech) which the book used, and I noticed, for the first time after owning this book for over 10 years, that there was no abbriviation for "conjunction" listed. And indeed, after consulting the index and looking through the book, it is plain to see that this book doesn't treat conjunction at all!

I have many fond memories of this book--it is the book which my beloved professor at grad school taught me NLP from, and indeed, it contains far more information about NLP than most of its successors. For example, this book gives perhaps the best discussion of quantifier scope ambiguities of all the major NLP textbooks. (cf. with Jurafski and Martin's book, which devotes about 1/2 a sentence to quantifier scope ambiguities).

But it has odd ommissions, one of which is the lack of treatment of conjunction/disjunction. After devoting so much time to quantifier scope, why does Allen leave me in the dark about whether "Every woman" can take scope over "a man" in the sentence "A man and every woman hug each other?" Does that scope differently from "Every woman and a man hug each other?" Or what about "Every woman and her mother fight?" Can that mean "Every woman fights with her mother" or are we to look for another antecedient for "her"?

Or again, Allen's treatment of prolog-esque definite clause grammars. Allen deserves major kudus here for including them. Its obvious that he comes from the LISP side of the tracks, and most LISPy books on NLP ignore DCG's altogether (Norvig's "Paridigms of AI programming" being a notable exception). But it seems almost like Allen goes out of his way to present DCGs in the most unattractive light possible. Prolog has a nice syntactic sugar which makes a DCG look almost exactly like a context-free grammar specification, but you'd never know that if you only read this book--Allen chooses a wierd way to translate strings into clauses, which implies a bizzare-looking prolog grammar for them. The student naturally recoils in horror, but unless she reads a prolog-oriented book on NLP, she would never know how much easier DCGs are to program than ATNs or the bottom-up parsing methods which Allen goes on to expostulate.

Since this book was published, the field of NLP has taken a bit of a side-track through statistical learning of grammars--the thought being that, well, we really don't know how to do knowledge representation or pronoun resolution very well, so lets all spend a decade or so on how to induce grammars from corpora. This book doesn't cover any of this research, but frankly, I really don't consider that a critique of the book. Because now that grammar induction has been done to death, we're right back where this book leaves off--computers can parse sentences all right: heck, these days, computers can even assign numbers between 0 and 1 to parse trees-- but can computers UNDERSTAND sentences?

I would love to see a 3rd edition of this book, and I'm sure I'm not alone. What I'd like to see it cover is (surprise surprise) conjunction/disjunction, discourse representation theory, underspecification, and a more meaty discussion of knowledge representation and inference. Also, a few chapters on natural language generation would be nice, as well as discussions on dialogue. Skip the sections on ATNs and other parsing methods which are only of historical interest now.

Flaws and all, this book is beloved of generations of NLP researchers and is still indispensible, after all these years.

Allen's book is a standard introduction to NLP in industry and academia. His exposition permits straightforward implementation and provides a lucid motivation for the algorithms he describes. "Natural Language Understanding" was the first NLP text I read (for a summer job), and I've always referred to it first for its balance of formal and practical considerations.
However, some developments in the past few years outpace his treatment. In particular, the stochastic viewpoint has become more common in natural-language processing, and Allen does not consider related innovations in great depth. Passing mention of the interaction between NLP and the speech processing and information retrievals would also benefit a revised version.

A Book about Business that Speaks Haiti's Language

Although this book was originally written for an American audience, Evan Keller has endeavored to adapt it specifically to fit the context of Haiti, where he mentors local entrepreneurs on a regular basis. It is filled with sound, practical advice on running a small business and I found much of it helpful to myself in my own work as rector of a school and owner of a fledgling translation business while translating it into Haitian Creole & French. As anyone who lives and works in Haiti knows, there is a paucity of literature available in the language of the people. As such, the greatest service Keller has given his readers might not the advice in the book itself (though that is very good) but the mere fact of putting a book this practical and in-depth into their mother tongue. This might well be the longest and most detailed book about business available in Haitian Creole. I certainly hope it will be a great help to many Haitians in years to come!

Really worth a reading

Writing this novel has got to have been a gut-wrenching effort on the author's part--and it has resulted in a moving novel. The best-written portrayal of 'denial' (or, rather "copping out") and its effect on the soul that I've read. Alternately harrowing, funny, sex-filled--but not in an exploitative manner--, the non-stop drinking and drugs that seem to be the norm in the dangerous and demanding blue-collar jobs that Jake holds during the novel. An unexpected character trait that humanizes Jake is when he quotes relevant passages from books he loved or memorized in his school days. The author has the ability to capture, in a few words, multiple characters and different U.S. locations. Really worth a reading.

Rivetting and heart-wreching

This is a heart-wrenching and riveting narrative that takes you into the soul of Jake and keeps you pulling for him. In telling Jake's story, the author writes beautifully about places and cultures ranging from southeastern Ohio to southern California and explores the many variations of family relationships.

Morris Wreaks Havoc on Your Heart

Benighted Jake Preston starts his story on a shoulder of Route 99 south of Fresno in the San Joaquin Valley of California. He is on the road again -- still the wanderer since he ran away from home in his mid-teens. This 22-year-old man has known trouble for as long as he can remember and is on the verge of a difficult decade that will set the rest of his life. Drugs, alcohol, and sex challenge him like inherited demons. Only his work ethic and the memory of a sister somewhere out there pulls him back from hell.

. . . Won't Come Home fits a traditional literary genre, the picaresque tale. It typically presents episodic adventures of a rough and dishonest but clever and appealing hero like Jake Preston. Jake's world echoes more of Kerouac's On the Road (1957) than the prototypical anonymous Spanish The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes and of His Fortunes and Adversities (four hundred years earlier). Jake is an antihero, roguish, cunning, fending for subsistence. He serves several human masters during this decade, almost all of whom abuse him, but none more so than his inherited demons.

The author knows whereof he writes. He lived in the San Joaquin Valley for years before moving a physical and psychological distance and gaining a perspective that has let him write this absorbing narrative. The whole story comes from a writer who has been there and done that. Trust him.
