In this book, Chris Bilton, who has worked as a performer, writer, arts worker and academic, challenges the stereotypical opposition between ‘creatives’ and ‘suits’. Creativity, he suggests, is not just about spontaneous discovery and inspiration, it is also a self-conscious, deliberately managed process. Similarly, management is not only shaped by rational processes, it also involves insight, intuition, creativity and risk.

Bilton draws on the work of management theorists and creativity theorists, and on the practical experience of individuals working in creative industries, in his attempt to improve our understanding of the relationship between the management of creativity and creative approaches to management. His work forms part of a wider move to consider the relevance of creative processes and structures in our new, creative economy.

About the Author
Dr Chris Bilton is Lecturer in the Centre for Cultural Policy Studies and Director of the MA in Creative and Media Enterprises at the University of Warwick. Previously, he has worked as a performer, writer, community arts worker and arts development officer.

A Scientific Approach

This book doesn't necessarily talk much about 'management' in the sense of being a manager and dealing with a creative team so much as it talks about creativity and how it is perceived and how that leads to misconceptions about how people react to 'creative types'. It's also very 'scientific' and by that I mean that each chapter the author posits something and then reasons his way to the last paragraph where he restates his hypothesis. But overall, a good read.

A little overkill for a basic physics course

This was the required text selected for the 2 semester basic physics course at my college, in a course made up of biology, architecture and pre-med students. Some of us have had calculus, but many of us haven't. I'm a biology major and I have not yet taken calculus.

I found the book to be a bit difficult to understand. It relies too much on math formulas, without enough pictures, graphics and descriptions. The problems at the back of every chapter are good, but I haven't found the text to be helpful at all. It seems to be a good book, but it wasn't the right choice for a basic college physics course.

competing in a crowded market

Well, the artwork in the book is certainly gorgeous. A pleasure to read. But I am uncertain how distinctive the text really is, in providing any unique and advantageous insight to a university undergraduate struggling with a physics course.

Which is not to say that the material is wrong or poorly written. Clearly, the authors have distilled a lot of effort into composing the text, and assembling a diverse set of problems and examples. Where these are often chosen to pique the reader's interest, by invoking real life situations that might be germane to her.

The biggest problem this book faces is that there are several other long standing physics texts, now deep into their n-th editions. Mindshare is a difficult thing to acquire under these circumstances.

Timothy C Lethbridge is Associate Professor in the School of Information Technology and Engineering at the University of Ottawa, Ontario. Both authors have taught software engineering courses for fourteen years, and have attempted to tune the book so that it is both useful and enjoyable to students. Their industrial experience performing software development, consulting and professional training has also allowed them to focus on material that is important to the employers of the students that will use this text.

Object-Oriented Software Engineering: Practical Software Development Using UML and Java

The book meets in a timely fashion the requirements I had for my consulting business in software development. It covers at lenght the concepts of software engineering, reusable technology and requirements development in a easy to read fashion. The added values are the introduction of design patterns and design principles in the presentation of the design concepts. Finally, the addition of testing and management concepts wraps the overall concepts of software engineering in a complete and very satisfactory fashion. This reading is highly recommended.
