InDesign CS5 JavaScript, by Grant Gamble

InDesign is now regarded as the industry standard in desktop publishing and is very widely used by publishing professionals and non-specialists alike. Many users have a pressing need for automation of their workflows but have been reluctant to get started because of the lack of a simple internal mechanism for recording steps, like Photoshop and Illustrator actions. Instead InDesign relies on scripting which, for many InDesign users, may seem a little too much like hard work. In fact, InDesign comes with all the tools necessary for creating scripts and scripting is not that difficult—it can even be fun!

This book is aimed at the general user and provides an introduction to scripting InDesign, using JavaScript to create simple cross-platform solutions.

  • Learn proactively through step-by-step tutorials on creating JavaScript solutions: the "Try it for yourself!" approach allows you to learn how scripts are put together by actually writing them.
  • Create scripts that manipulate text and images, build documents automatically and output them as interactive PDFs.
  • Become familiar with the InDesign object model: as you work through the tutorials, you will make repeated use of the essential syntax for manipulating InDesign objects such as documents, master spreads, pages, text frames, graphics and preferences.
  • Create user interfaces to make your scripts more flexible and user-friendly. Rather than just writing scripts which always perform the same steps, you will learn to use ScriptUI dialog windows to provide users with the ability to make choices that determine what the script will do.

Please note that this edition does not cover the use of XML in InDesign workflows. This topic is addressed in the longer version of this book: "InDesign CS5 Automation using XML and JavaScript", ISBN 978-1460915387.

So far, so good.
By Tae W. Moon
I haven't finished reading the book (because I have to learn JavaScript and XML); However, I would like to say that for a person who has little inclination for learning javascript or any other computer language, the author explains it easily. If you need to learn Javascript and InDesign and XML, I would recommend this book as it cares to explain it in a logical manner. Also, the tutorials look relevant and it makes me want to go through them and really learn them as I realize I need to use those tutorials in my workflow. I will write a follow-up after I am done.

Learning it any way I can today
By Jaime S
This is the statement that made me buy this book..." If you want to start using JavaScript and XML to automate InDesign, and are looking for clear and concise guidance on how it all works, this book is all you will need to get up and running." As someone who works on computers and dabbles with design, how often have you wanted to take the next step and were not sure how to create it. You try to take a beginners course only to find out you needed the next step since you already figured out how to do what they just taught you. Maybe you are looking for that reading material that gives you not only the ideas but the steps in order to make it happen.

If this sounds like you then this book titled "InDesign Automation CS5 Using XML And JavaScript" by Grant Gamble may be just what you are looking for and a very good reference book to add to your library. As you have been capturing your productivity you know you can open up hours of your time if you were able to automate the program. Yet, programming language is an art form that must be learned and not everyone jumps into this with both feet. It comes gradually until you know there is no way to move forward without it. Purchase this book and read the step by step instructions on how to move forward and you can be rewarded with time.

The time you save and the tutorials you complete as you learn the techniques will be an eye opening experience and something that you will refer back to when you have questions. Learn to "to manipulate and control key elements of the InDesign object model such as documents, preferences, master spreads, pages, page items, text frames, text, graphics, fonts, styles and tables." This is something that is becoming common place for all computer users. If you are into graphics and learning new interfaces with programming language then this book will not let you down. Everyone likes to learn new things that save time and cool while you are doing it. Learn the right steps and you'll be creating web content like you have never imagined.

Working my way through this incredible source
By Quentin
My company is planning to base its entire product catalogue for 2012 on XML data sources and I sure needed some help. Heck, I didn't know where to begin! InDesign CSS Automation Using XML & Javascript is coming through for me fortunately. I am making my way through the excellent tutorials and my progress is steady (although I am slow). I appreciate the precept-upon-precept approach and the clear way the author communicates. I found out about it at their InDesignSecrets Internet site and I am sure glad I did.

Then an elderly don tasks her with locating an Indian servant who may have stolen an invaluable mathematics proof. Perveen is caught in a case that threatens her ladylike reputation--and her life.

THE AYAH'S TALE. Menakshi Dutt, a teenaged nanny in 1920s Bengal, is a beloved caregiver of three lonely British children, but suffers from the cruelty of their bored mother. Will Menakshi ever fulfill her own dreams without betraying the children?

INDIA GRAY. Kamala Lewes, a recently-married Bengali woman, travels to Assam during World War II to volunteer at a military hospital. There she discovers some patients with ties to the Indian independence movement. How far can she go to help them without betraying her British husband and the Allies?

BITTER TEA. Shazia is fifteen and trapped in a remote village in Pakistan overtaken by religious fundamentalists. Her school has been closed, and women have lost freedom of movement. But when Shania learns a friend faces danger from the invaders, she decides to act.

Four unforgettable heroines in one book rich with history, culture and intrigue.

Recent Reviews:
"Clever Kamala is at front and center throughout, as Massey builds her coming of age tale around India as it moves toward independence, effectively combining personal narrative with the grandeur of a sweeping historical epic...The Sleeping Dictionary, an utterly engrossing tale of love, espionage, betrayal and survival, is historical fiction at its best, accessible to all audiences. Recommend to readers of Arundati Roy and Bharati Mukherjee".--BOOKLIST on THE SLEEPING DICTIONARY (starred review)

"Evocative descriptions of the late Raj period's Indian cultures, customs, cuisine, flora and fauna are narrated delightfully. Although this is essentially a story of love and human endurance, Massey, an award-winning author, has admirably woven the events of the Indian independence movement into the plot...this is an informative and entertaining historical novel."--HISTORICAL NOVEL SOCIETY on THE SLEEPING DICTIONARY

"Sujata Massey beautifully depicts the life of an Indian ayah and the complicated relationships that people in the employ of their colonial masters had to deal with. Even though Menakshi endures great hardships in her life, she feels love in these pages and the prospect of a more hopeful future..."---MARIE'S BOOK GARDEN on THE AYAH'S TALE

"Massey deftly plays with several strong threads, each of which gives a certain heft to the story. She explores the relationship between parents and children, Indians and British, upper and lower classes, hope and hopelessness, India and abroad, stories and reality. Read it to find out what speaks to you most."--SOUTH OF THE BORDER, WEST OF THE SUN on THE AYAH'S TALE

Wonderful and Highly recommended!
By AZ Reader
When the 1st season of Indian Summers on NPR finished I was left hungering for more on the exotic and romantic fiction on India. I found what I was looking for in Sujata Massey's wonderful boxed set of historical stories. Four novellas play out in different times and places, each featuring young women willing to take on the status quo.

Outnumbered at Oxford features two young friends, Perveen, a young woman from India and her British friend, Alice. This is a missing person mystery that centers around the class structure in English colleges as well as what happens to someone who is brilliant but not English.

The Ayah's Tale is a deeply moving story set in India, during the last years of the British Empire's dominion over India--and my favorite, on so many levels. I read this one long past my bedtime.

India Gray is also set in India, but during WWII, recounting the hardships of Indians who walked the tightrope between independence and allegiance to Great Britain, and those Indians who took sides with the Japanese. Fascinating!

Last but not least, is a contemporary story, Bitter Tea, set in Pakistan, again featuring young women, sisters who're brave enough to take on a corrupt official. I cheered for the girls and their clever revenge.

It was wonderful to read about women whom, because of circumstance of birth or the government they live under, are willing to fight for some sense of justice.

WOMEN MAKE THE WORLD GO ROUND
By KOMET
"INDIA GRAY" is a collection of 4 stories of varying lengths ('Outnumbered at Oxford', 'The Ayah's Tale', 'India Gray', and 'Bitter Tea'), all of which are set in venues as diverse as 1919 Britain and the Asian subcontinent from the time of the British Raj to the early 21st Century.

Sujata Massey is the type of writer who has a rare skill in creating characters who are real and easily relatable to the reader, and in also educating the reader about the cultural nuances, history and relationships among people through economical, insightful prose. What is more: each story is centered around 4 remarkable women (Parveen Mistry, a law student at St. Hilda's College, Oxford; Menakshi Dutt, a young Bengali woman working as an ayah for a wealthy British family in 1920s Bengal; Kamala Lewes, a Bengali polyglot, married to a British civil official, and working for the Red Cross in a military hospital in Assam, India during the spring of 1945; and Shazia, a teenaged Pakistani living with her family in a village in NW Pakistan controlled by a Muslim fundamentalist), who --- despite the social and cultural restrictions of their time --- show remarkable resourcefulness and strength of character in dealing with a variety of challenging situations.

I so much enjoyed reading "INDIA GRAY" and felt pained after reading the last page. More please.

A gem of a book
By Carolien Samson
This is a gem of a book. Each short story addresses a different historical time period and provides an insight from an unusual angle on the events. The first story deals with the sense of alienation felt by a first generation of Indian students in the British university scene early in the 1900s. It also provides additional context in that it is written from a female perspective of the time.

I loved The Aya's Tale which provides information on the ambiguity experienced by Anglo-Indians in India. I can relate to that in the South African context where persons of mixed race often have a similar experience.

India's role in WWII is not often described and it is very interesting to read about it against the background of the nationalistic spirit and wish for independence that prevailed at the time in the third story.

I found each story to be well-developed with interesting characters. In an era where novellas are often produced purely to entice the reader to buy additional books in a series, it is wonderful to find a complete book of short stories that can be enjoyed in their own right.

This was my first book by the author and I am most definitely planning on reading more of her books. I originally encountered her on the Murder as Everywhere blog and have always found her articles to be worth exploring on the blog [...]

The Prophetic traditions of Islam, which are commonly referred to as the hadiths (literally: ‘reports’), preserve the sum and substance of the utterances, deeds, directives, and descriptive anecdotes connected with the life of the Prophet Muhammad and his Companions. Together with the Qur’an, the hadiths provide the religion of Islam with its principal scriptural sources.

The collection features an accessible and informative introduction which presents an outline of the significance of the hadiths within the religious tradition while also reviewing classical scholarship devoted to the literature of the traditions; moreover, the introduction decisively sets into context the academic debates and arguments which are fleshed out in the articles selected. It also charts developments in the academic study of hadiths, summing up the current state of the field and features a detailed bibliography listing primary classical sources germane to the field of Prophetic traditions together with recent research monographs and articles devoted to the subject.

This Major Work provides an authoritative collection of the seminal research articles produced by western academic scholarship on the subject of the hadith over the past century, including recent papers on the subject. In bringing together the finest examples of scholarship devoted to the hadith and the classical literature that surrounds it, these volumes provide an indispensable reference resource for academics, research institutions, governmental organizations, and those with a general interest in Arabic and Islamic Studies, Religious Studies, Arabic Cultural Studies, and Middle East History.

Review

The Ḥadīth. Edited by Mustafa Shah. Critical Concepts in Islamic Studies. London:

Routledge, 2009. Pp. 1,704. £650.00.

This is a magnificent collection of essays on the subject of ḥadīth scholarship. The

Routledge series of ‘Critical Concepts in Islamic Studies’, for those who are

unfamiliar with the format, marks an important new initiative in the publication of

material on the subject. Unlike the Variorum presentation with which most of us have

long been familiar, the articles in these volumes are completely re-typeset in a

common format and each volume is continuously paginated, all of which gives a

much greater homogeneity and elegance to the whole. All the collections amount to

between three and six full-length volumes. Among the other collections in the series

which are likely to be of interest to students of early Islamic studies are Colin Turner’s

collection on The Koran, Paul Luft and Colin Turner on Shi’ism, and Lloyd Ridgeon’s

two collections on Sufism and Islam and Religious Diversity.

In four volumes Mustafa Shah has collected no fewer than 61 papers reflecting many

different approaches to the subject. All the papers come from the Western academic

tradition and all of them are in English. The editor stresses that they are all peer

reviewed, though quite how far the term ‘peer review’ can really be used of

Goldziher’s work is debatable. Suffice it to say that all the articles and chapters (for

some of the pieces chosen are particularly important sections from full-length books)

are by established scholars in the field, and I think it is fair to say that every single one

of them makes important and relevant points. There are, so to speak, no weak links.

The material is arranged by topic and themes, though, as Shah points out, many of the

themes overlap and many of the articles deal with more than one of them. Volume I is

concerned with ‘Codification, Authenticity’, Volume II with ‘Isnāds: Transmission,

Terminology and the Issue of Dating’, Volume III with ‘Scholarship, Perspectives and

Criticism’ and Volume IV with ‘Narrative, Context and Content’. In addition to the

‘Introduction’, there is also a chronological table which arranges all the articles by

date of publication, ranging from Goldziher in 1889–90 (although his ‘Ḥadīth and

Sunna’ is presented in Stern’s 1967 English translation) to Jonathan Brown’s ‘How do

we know early ḥadīth critics did matn criticism and why is it so hard to find?’ of 2008.

This is a long time span, though it is worth noting that Goldziher’s contribution is the

only one which dates from before 1950, and the collection as a whole demonstrates

the vast explosion of scholarly interest in ḥadīth studies which was characteristic of

the second half of the twentieth century and shows no signs of diminishing in the

twenty-first.

The book opens with a substantial introduction by the editor. Considering the wealth

and variety of material in the four volumes, his summary is a masterpiece of clarity

and erudition, introducing the reader to all the main themes of the collection. In

particular, he takes Albert Berg’s division of scholars of ḥadīth into two separate

camps, the sceptical and the sanguine, and sees how different scholars fit into it.

There can be no doubt that the overriding theme in the collection, and indeed in the

whole scholarly discussion, is the question of dating and authenticity. The first paper

sets the agenda. It is often said that all Western philosophy is essentially footnotes to

Plato: it sometimes seems as if all of academic Islamic studies are essentially footnotes

to Goldziher. It was his essay, reproduced here, which raised for the first time the idea

that the ḥadīth as we have them now were essentially generated in the second/eighth

and third/ninth centuries to propagate a vision of Islam which had little if anything, to

do with the Islam of the time of the Prophet. Few now would accept his image of the

Umayyads as arrogant and godless tyrants, indeed recent scholarship has tended to

enhance the reputation of ʿAbd al-Malik, among others, as a serious figure in the

development of Islamic law, but his view of the elaboration of ḥadīth as a deliberate

construct of learned men still commands some support. And in the footsteps of

Goldziher comes, of course, Schacht with his almost blanket dismissal of Prophetic

traditions.

In the other, sanguine, camp Shah places Nabia Abbott, a brilliant textual historian

whose work is sometimes underestimated, Fuat Sezgin and Mustafa Azami, all of

whom stress the antiquity of the earliest written ḥadīth. At the same time he points out

that the debate has in many ways moved beyond this sharp polarisation: Harald

Motzki, for example, seeing the apparent dichotomy as far too clear cut to reflect the

reality of many much more nuanced points of view. At the same time Gregor

Schoeler’s work on the complex interaction between the oral and the written has

added a whole new element to the discussion.

One of the great strengths of a collection like this is that it enables the student or the

scholar approaching the subject for the first time to gain an overview of the whole

question or rather of all the questions. Shah’s choice of papers means that we can see

all the great names at their most cogent, staking out their territory clearly, without the

reader having to track down rare and obscure articles in hard-to-find periodicals. And

there are pieces on subjects that are all too easily overlooked, like Maribel Fierro’s

essay on the introduction of ḥadīth into Andalusia. The final volume moves away

from issues of dating and reliability into interesting discussions of the more literary

aspects of ḥadīth narratives, with chapters on narrative discourse and modern literary

theory, ethics and aesthetics in ḥadīth, dreams as means to evaluate ḥadīth and a

feminist interpretation of knowledge, women and gender in the ḥadīth.

This is an excellently chosen and carefully edited selection of papers. In many ways it

is a much better introduction to ḥadīth studies than any single text book could be,

because it gives an insight into the whole scope of the subject, not just the well

rehearsed variety of opinions on dating and authenticity, but the wide variety of

different approaches with which people come to the subject.

I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK
By Books R Best
I very rarely give 5 stars, but having spent most of my life in Africa, I love reading books about its peoples and cultures. I commend Jeff Gardiner for making Lydia so real, yet keeping the book very realistic. When she first sees a snake she does not scream and hyperventilate, but mentions it almost as a matter of fact. To be left alone in a village, while civil war rages around, must have taken a lot of courage, yet her very naivety and her strict upbringing leads her to obey without question. We are reminded of the past, when women had little choice, very little voice and were seen as just an addition or background helper to the man she married. Although this was a fictional book, it rang true and the descriptions of the culture and customs explained clearly without censure or comparison with those s the west.
I really enjoyed this book, it is one I will remember for a long time and I hope many other people will like it too. I shall look out for more by this author.

Culture Clash
By Cynthia Harrison
Readers with flexible views on politics, religion, and colonialism will find this book a history lesson as well as an engrossing, tense and truthful novel. Novels do hold truths, and this gracefully told story, despite the many terrible events it conveys, has an essential goodness that shines through.

Lydia is the wife of a Methodist minister and missionary in Nigeria in the late 1960s. This was a turbulent time in Africa’s history, as Nigeria was just coming out from under colonial rule and tribal warfare was steadily growing. Lydia walks into this tense situation, determined to help bring Western ways to these people who are weary of being stripped of their gods, their culture, and their way of life. Lydia’s husband travels across the country, preaching Christianity, while Lydia must stay in a small village and cope with the distrust of the people. Gender is one of the complicated issues she must face more than once, as the Igbo treat women as second class citizens, hardly people at all, but property.

While Lydia is a sympathetic character, Clem, her husband is less so. He seems to feel his God is the only God, his way is the only way, and Lydia is caught unaware by all of this conflict. After all, she does have a few friends among the natives and they have told her of their beliefs and customs and she respects them and their right to their own heritage. It hurts her deeply that she is known as a white intruder, and a lowly woman to boot, yet she seeks ways in which to help those who suffer.

A kindly doctor helps her create a sort of hospital and she learns simple ways to ease the common ailments of the grateful village folk. Still, Clem seems to be quite uncaring that others, less grateful, curse his wife with juju, their form of asking the gods for retribution for white people’s, particularly Lydia’s, sins. She’s the subject of gossip and her servants steal from her, some even demanding the clothes off her back. I kept wanting Clem and Lydia to go back home to Britain, and eventually, they do, but not before things get far more complicated.

To tell more would spoil the story, but Gardiner’s resolution is symbolic of, if not his own feelings, at least those of what he wished to portray in this novel. It is, in the end, a story of conciliation and hope as well as a realistic accounting of a particular time in history on a troubled spot of our planet.

Nigerian tribal people's story
By Roses are Amber
Igboland is an African historical story. It's set in Nigeria in the late 1960's at a time of civil conflict. Nigeria had up to 200 tribes and internal politics were immense. The conflict boiled down to a war for power, oil and tribal dominance. This is not a true story, but one made up around facts of the time.

Into this dangerous situation went Reverend Clem Davie and his 19 year old wife Lydia as missionaries. In July 1967 they settled into their new home, the Methodist compound in the village of Ngkaluka amongst the Igbo people in this West African country. The village had recently been bombed and the couple immediately helped the villagers rebuild their lives. They worked with local Dr Kwento Umuwezie and were helped by other white settlers.

Clem's role was to oversee many local churches and schools, while Lydia struggled with the African living conditions and climate. She was very interested to learn about the local Igbo culture and religious spirituality which varied from the western civilisation and one god religion.

Lydia began to question the role of a missionary;

" They think we offer an escape from poverty and sickness, but we really just take them away from their tribal culture."

As the conflict increased around them making travel near impossible Lydia found that the tribal instincts ran deep and that any white man who got in the way only had himself to blame.

There were many occasions when the Africa fought back, the Igbo explained that they had a 4 day week and the white man's 7 days, didn't fit with their own language, they only had four names for days. Servants let them down or stole from them. they had a saying WAWA - West Africa Wins Again to explain away some of the hardships.

Clem's determination to help increased as the war continued and he went off on missions with Charlotte to rescue Igbo's, putting his life at risk. They helped a young woman called Grace who had been brutally attacked and she became a good friend to Lydia, helping set up a local clinic with the help of Dr Umuwezie.

In the end WAWA when both Lydia and Clem returned to England short of their 6 year contract due to different reasons, but it wasn't the end for them either.

I'd never heard of the Igbo and was interested in their spiritual beliefs. They root in very ancient times. Sadly you can see that the fight for dominance by man causes conflict and suffering as people lose their freedom; freedom to live, freedom to worship, freedom to love.

A Royal Affair: Book One

Doctor Nikolai Hartmann represents himself as a learned man of science who believes wholly in the rational and scientific above all else. In reality, he is a man haunted by an unusual past and running from his own nature. While the Reformation transforms much of Europe, it has yet to touch Hesse-Davia; this is a land mired in superstition with cruel punishments for crimes such as witchcraft and sodomy.

While traveling to the dying king’s bedside to offer his medical expertise, Nikolai is set upon by a bandit. Reaching the king’s ancient stronghold, he discovers his mysterious brigand is the beautiful, arrogant Prince Aleksey. Aleksey is everything Nikolai is not: unguarded, passionate, and willful. Despite their differences, Nikolai feels an irresistible desire for the young royal that keeps him in Aleksey’s thrall.

But Hesse-Davia is a dangerous world for a newly crowned king who wants to reform his country—and for the man who loves him.

Very interesting premise, needs some work.
By Das Englisch von Königin
This is okay. I wouldn't call it the "best book ever" like some other reviewers. It's a very good premise and the story is sound. My biggest beef is that the characters, beyond the narrator, are not very well developed. The love story between him and the prince would be more believable if the prince were more than just a good looking 23 year old with startling green eyes. There is so much potential for rich story lines and characters throughout the book. The other characters enter the stage say a few lines and they walk off with very small bit parts after that and we're supposed to see them as flesh and blood people and understand and care about their motivations. I would like to have gotten to know all of them much better. It was very difficult placing the time in history that this takes place. Sometime after the American colonies are beginning to be established but somehow there are no guns? The fighting takes place with swords and spears, and they have gunpowder to cause explosions, but no cannon, and no guns. There are some holes in the plot. There is an invasion from a nearby kingdom but we never know why. The old king is poisoned, but we never find out who the perpetrator was and suddenly the threat just goes away (I guess). Also, I think a bit of historical research would have been in order. Kings are never alone, and have no privacy, yet in this story, somehow they do and are able to carry on affairs in secret in the middle of a full court. Don't get me wrong, this is not a terrible book, I just think it needed a bit more developing. Apparently it is the beginning of a series and I hope the sequel will have less rough edges. The author has excellent writing skills, he just needs a little more development and a good content editor.

Compelling characters, vivid, action packed setting, believable romance, all wrapped in a fresh and captivating narrative style
By Dianne T.
This book is, in a word, brilliant. Definitely one of my favorite reads this year – I could gush on and on. John Wiltshire is a new to me author, and I went looking for more of his work immediately.

The “voice” of 35 year old Nikolai is the heart and soul of this story. His narrative begins with a veiled prologue. I was hooked from the first sentence, and found myself wanting, no make that craving, his full story. In vivid and absorbing detail Nikolai recounts his somewhat harrowing solo journey across a stark and brutal Europe to reach the court of Hesse-Davia, where the king is suffering from a long illness. Nikolai is an unconventionally trained doctor who, by virtue of his healing talents, found himself held in high favor with English aristocracy which in turn earned him the summons to tend the foreign king.

Nikolai’s first interactions with the king’s youngest son – the brash and alluring 23 year old Aleksey – involved a fair amount of snark and an underlying spark, setting up a powerful dynamic between the two that builds cleverly and deliciously throughout the course of the story. This is an exchange between the two men after Nikolai’s initial examination of the king:

“What did you think of my father?”

“He is very sick.”

He scoffed lightly. “And you come all this way to tell us that. How grateful we all are.”

“Sarcasm isn’t likely to improve his health. I will tell you that for free.”

I loved both men from the moment they appeared on page, and they proceeded to exasperate and delight me in equal measure. Nothing was simple and nobody was quite what they seemed to be. Though Nikolai is narrating this story – with wonderful insight, great detail and some of the wittiest and funniest dialogue I’ve had the pleasure of reading – his recognition of exactly what was transpiring between him and Aleksey lags behind that of the reader. Nikolai, by necessity born of the time and place in which he is living, has to suppress his true inclinations. Men in Hesse-Davia were brutally tortured and killed for sodomy – he had been an eye witness to it. Throughout the story, there is a slow reveal of Nikolai’s past. I was mesmerized by what it turned out to contain. As he was forced to recall events from his life, he found himself having to remember, share, and process many unpleasant memories. The use of this narrative style delivered powerful, authentic character and relationship development.

Nikolai was able to successfully treat the king, but could not quite bring himself to leave Hesse-Davia, or more specifically – Aleksey. Aleksey was not ready to lose the companionship of Nikolai, and so asked him to join his army as a field doctor in their looming war against a neighboring land. Nikolai accepted. Going to war actually brought the men in closer and constant contact with one another. The escalation of their romance took place juxtaposed with savage battle and brutal medical scenes (the blood soaked snow and dagger on the book cover have definite relevance!). Nikolai seemed better able to deal with all the death and destruction than the fact that he was in love. Aleksey in turn had never experienced a relationship such as he finds himself in with Nikolai, and he is slow to acknowledge the romantic nature of it, but once he does, there is no holding him back. Once they are finally able to accept and embrace the reality of their feelings – and each other – Aleksey’s legacy and the weight of the kingdom crash down around them.

Poison was definitely a running theme throughout the story. There were the obvious poisonings that Nikolai dealt with as a doctor, but he also viewed organized religion as a poison of sorts. Nikolai questions Aleksey as to the king’s routine:

“Who has access to the king when he prays?”

“No one except God, and I do not think God is trying to poison my father.”

Why not? I thought. He’s poisoned almost everyone else he’s had contact with.

Power is also viewed as a poison. This shows up in Nikolai’s memories of his childhood and formative years, as well as in the high courts and on the battle fields of Hesse-Davia. Interestingly, the build- up and culmination of the relationship between Aleksey and Nikolai could be considered a slow poison as well.

Strong secondary characters – including a loyal wolf and a couple of supremely brave horses (always a plus in a story for me!) – compliment Nikolai and Aleksey. The surprising and actually very original revelation of how Nikolai spent his younger years hit a nerve for me as well, and lent credence to his negative views on organized religion, European “law and order” and the Hesse-Davian battle tactics.

The intriguing set up in the prologue, combined with great dialogue, witty humor, snarky banter, careful reveals, more than a few plot twists, and some “oh what the hell, no this can’t be happening!!” moments toward the end, left me turning page after page, often with my heart in my throat. Not to worry though… no cliffhanger. Well, actually, there is a cliff….

I can’t recommend this book highly enough. There are many details and plot devices I’ve purposely not touched on, as the discovery of them and the way they are spun out over the course of the story are huge reasons for what makes it so memorable. A Royal Affair absolutely delivers all that I’m looking for in a story: unique and compelling characters, a vivid, action packed setting, believable romance, all wrapped in a fresh and captivating narrative style.

A sequel is promised by the author. I’ll be first in line!

Like a bodice ripper. But with no bodices.
By A. White
Loved this book! Far more violence (think Game of Thrones style) than the m/m romance books I usually read. A couple of scenes were pretty hard for me the get through. BUT, it's very true to the time and place, I'm sure (think, Outlander), so, it works. I loved the main characters and I loved their growing relationship.

I had a hard time placing this book in a specific set of years. There's talk of a microscope, and country names that we use today, but also talk of the Dark Ages and Enlightenment. And some of the descriptions felt Medieval. So, I was a bit lost in time. But, the story made up for it and I'm assuming the author did his research....

I felt a tad bit that the two main characters were too good to be true. Both the tallest, most handsome, well-toothed (is that a word? lol), enlightened men in the whole country. With romantic, mysterious pasts (how often do you run across a raised Native American in Germany by the way of the UK who is a doctor with a horse that practically reads his mind? (where DID the horse come from, btw? England? Then how was Niko THAT in tune with it? And if it was on the ship with him from America, then why wasn't it a part of what happened to him on the ship? - no spoilers). Anyway, it felt a little like bodice ripper hero territory.

The MCs did spend a bit too much time being crabby with each other over misunderstandings or slights (really, with ALL the horror going on, you're going to get upset because you don't see someone for a few hours?). Niko, in particular, is overly sensitive to any imagined slight. But then, they both go off and kill a bunch of people, so, you know, I guess they aren't THAT sensitive.

Anyway, it was a bit of departure for me for m/m, but I really liked it and I bought the sequel right away.

Review
"An essential primer for anyone wanting to make it big in the fashion biz." Nicholas Coleridge, Managing Director, Conde Nast "Explores the popularization of fashion and explains how marketers and branding experts have turned clothes and accessories into objects of desire. The 'back story' of where goods come from and how they are manufactured and sold is always fascinating, which is why Tungate's book so appealed." Publishing News "Fashion Brands includes exclusive quotes and insights into brand strategy from designers such as Paul Smith and Diesel founder Renzo Rosso." In-Store Magazine "Dissects the fashion industry from high street to haute couture and gives a detailed history of fashion brands as well as explaining the influence of branding." Media Week "Men don't shop seasonally," says Mark Tungate, Paris-based writer and author of Fashion Brands: Branding Style from Armani to Zara." Daily Telegraph "Useful nuggets" Financial Times "Littered with amusing anecdotes." Marketing "Includes brand strategy insights from designers such as Paul Smith and Deisel founder Renzo Rosso, interviews with influential industry figures and behind-the-scenes reports." Fashion Business International "An interesting read for anyone involved in the fashion or marketing sector." International Textiles "getAbstract.com recommends this book to marketers - even those who are not fashion minded - who want to rejuvenate their creativity and pick up some new sources of inspiration and style." www.getAbstract.com "Drawing on research and interviews (he had no experience with the fashion industry before writing this book), he writes in a conversational manner for a general readership and for professionals involved with marketing." Reference & Research Book News "This is the most fun non-fiction book that I've read in a long time, while simultaneously unique and useful. Written in a witty and readable journalistic style, this book unravels the magic behind an industry that uses more smoke and mirrors than Hollywood." Anoop Maini, Chartered Management Institute (www. Managers.org.uk) "Tungate's absorbing and thoroughly entertaining book examines the new rules of the global fashion industry... An impressive and authoritative overview of what is arguably the world's original brand name industry." AdBrands.net "Journalist Mark Tungate presents a terrific overview of many key aspects of this gritty yet ephemeral business." Reader review by Rolf Dobelli, Amazon.com "Most of the content has come up in the leading fashion and culture magazines and business media... But Tungate brings all of these subjects, all of these themes, and all of these prominent fashion brands together for a picture of the system of which they are all a part. With his broader perspective, he also gives a global perspective not limited to the vibrant, shop-til-you-drop, U.S. market and its advanced ideology of consumerism where many of the "branding" ideas and techniques originated, but including also European and Asian markets." The Midwest Book Review "Explores the popularization of fashion and explains how marketers and branding have turned clothes and accessories into objects of desire." www.brandrepublic.com "Interesting things to say about the effects of the global marketplace on fashion brands." Drapers "Will appeal to fashion students and those with an interest in the business side of the fashion world." Sew Today

From School Library Journal
reSchool-Grade 3-This first book by an author born in the Yukon and a member of the Na-Cho Nyak Dun First Nation is about respecting and caring for the planet. Tess, five, visits her grandmother's mountain cabin. The woman wants to teach the child about her garden, which consists of all of the plants growing wild on the surrounding land. The first rule is "that you must always take good care of our garden." Following that, she tells Tess to say a prayer of thanks while picking; to harvest just enough and at the right time; and to take care not to trample the vegetation or leave rubbish. For dinner, they gather wild edibles-lamb's-quarters, dandelion shoots, and blueberries. Wood's realistic yet impressionistic watercolors are glowing and lush, with dabs of color for light and shadow, wilderness landscapes, and close-ups of berries and woodland animals. This story would work particularly well for Earth Day or as part of a nature ecology unit. Though the title leans toward the didactic, it will attract interested browsers.

A beautiful, charming children's picturebook
By Midwest Book Review
Lessons From Mother Earth is a beautiful, charming children's picturebook written by Elaine McLeod and featuring watercolor-style artwork by Colleen Wood. Tess is a young Native American girl whose grandmother teaches her about gardening and the bounty of Mother Earth. Lessons From Mother Earth is an enjoyable and gentle story about the inherent joy of working with the earth and bringing life from the soil.
