James K. A. Smith (PhD, Villanova University) is the Gary & Henrietta Byker Chair in Applied Reformed Theology & Worldview at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He has penned the critically acclaimed Who's Afraid of Postmodernism? and Introducing Radical Orthodoxy, and his edited books include After Modernity? and Hermeneutics at the Crossroads. Not sure what to think...

I spent a fair bit of time reading, pondering, and taking notes on this book. It is well-written, insightful, and it made me think harder about some important matters.

My three star ranking is due to one fundamental issue that kept nagging me throughout the book, namely the claim that worship precedes thinking/doctrine/beliefs. There is no doubt we love things many times before we can properly explain them, but I do not find the clean progression of moving from worship to thinking about our beliefs the right alternative. It seems there is a more dynamic interplay rather than the clean progression Smith argues for.

Today (April 5, 2016) I landed upon a generally appreciative review of Smith's latest book, You are What You Love. It is by New Testament scholar, Patrick Schreiner. You are What You Love is a more accessible version of Desiring the Kingdom. Schreiner has much positive to say about Smith's work (I agree with these sentiments, especially with respect to Smith's terrific book, How (not) to be Secular). However, Schreiner voices a mild concern which is similar to the one I stated above:

"I still personally wonder if the picture he [Smith] paints is actually too neat. Maybe the process of theological anthropology is too complex to break down into humans primarily being this or that. Because isn’t the intellect a part of the body’s and heart’s process of desiring?"

Groundbreaking.

Had to purchase this for class but it's worth the read, class or not. It's essential reading for thinking about Christian discipleship and teaching. Smith is one of the better thinkers and theologians today. His main point is that human beings are primarily lovers driven by desire, not thinkers like we are often led to believe post-Enlightenment. Smith just released a more popular version of the book, but do yourself a favor and do the extra work of getting through this.

Revisionng Education

When JAK Smith wrote this book he reignited the discussion about the nature of CHristian Education. He is a lucid writer who I think rightly see that anthropology holds the key to understanding to the nature of Education and more specifically Christian Education. It is a good corrective to the general thrust from the reformed Christian educationalists who can be prone to seeing humans as essentially "thinking beings" rather than worshipping/desiring beings. I would recommend those who are in the position of shaping the educational endeavour of their institution to read this book and to engage with the ideas that Smith presents.

Excellent Articles on a Little-Understood Period

This is a fascinating group of articles published by an impressive list of Egyptologists. In addition to the black and white figures within the text, there are a great many color plates at the end. It is nice to see a volume dedicated to research on the Second Intermediate Period, a very confusing and poorly documented era in Egyptian history.

Great childhood story

I just found Gil McNeil and am very happy I did so. I've now read about four of her books and really enjoyed them all. She is downright funny! And it is great to know that all our children react and act in the very same way. It kind of gives you the knowledge that you're not alone in this and there is hope. You may have to wait until they are thirty, but there is hope!

A definite thumbs up for Gil McNeil. I'll be reading everything she writes!

Loved this book. I have read almost all this authors books and everyone is terrific. She is a must read. The kids in the books are always entertaining and fun. the lead character is a strong women.

What a delight! Gil McNeil writes about crazy life as a single mother.This book has an amazing, darling, creative young boy...not to mention smart. I have read her knitting series and loved the boys in those books,This small boy plays a large part in the goings on in a small English village. Gil doesn't go conventional in her contemporary Happy Ending.

Bruns does it again!

Chances are, if you are reading this book, you have probably read the three previous installments of this series and are eager to learn how the plot progresses. This book does indeed tie up most loose ends and answers all or most of the reader's questions about Bianca and Brian's whirlwind romance. (I cannot explain what questions I specifically wanted answer because that would give away the ending!) But what sets this book apart from its predecessors is its fine attention to detail and imagery. Bruns uses this book to highlight his vast knowledge of art and history. The unique ports that the Wind Surf visits are all revered for their art, history, and culture. Bruns is able to tell the history of these destinations by providing a story within a story. It felt like a history lesson, but held my interest throughout. Bruns does a brilliant job of using imagery and foreshadowing throughout his book to paint a vivid picture while teasing the reader of things to come. While I enjoyed reading all of the Cruise Confidential books, I strongly believe that this was the best one. Bruns has sharpened his writing skills and mastered the art of combining storytelling and recanting history.

In this book, you will meet some unique characters. While they aren't as vibrant and as plentiful as past Cruise Confidential books, they are still memorable and add to the plot. You will definitely find characters you love and hate. Is with past installments of this series, betrayal and psychotic characters seem to be the norm. Ultimately, this book seems to be about the author's inner struggle to find peace. This is one of those books that you will start to read but will never want to put down; the plot is just that good!

A satisfying end to a series.

I started reading the Cruise Confidential series because I love cruises and wanted to know the dirty side of working for a cruise line. However, it was Mr. Bruns's way with storytelling and my need to know how his love story ended that kept me reading each new installment. The series started off with a tumultuous sea and ended with drifting on calm waters. This book brings on a whole new cast of people and adventures each described with great detail to the point where you feel like you know them yourself.

I don't know if all of his stories are true and I don't care. I felt like I was sailing with Bruns and his coworker family on the Wind Surf. Every new port was a history lesson and I felt like I was there experiencing it with him. What I really liked about this book, and the entire series really, is that for every seemingly egotistical thing he says, there is something that happens that proves he's just a human like the rest of us.

This final installment of his adventure wrapped it all up (for the most part) in a nice bow and I loved that.

High Seas Drifter is an adventure. It is a travelog, a historical tour, a love story, a tragedy and a comedy. Bruns at times will be a swashbuckling hero and other times you think out loud "don't do it stupid". He is human but man is he interesting. Enjoy his exploits.

Instead, contrary to the conventional view that Confucian rule aims to instill virtue in all members of society, El Amine demonstrates that its main aim is to promote political order.

El Amine analyzes key aspects of the Confucian political vision, including the relationship between the ruler and the people, the typology of rulers, and the role of ministers and government officials. She also looks at Confucianism's account of the mechanisms through which society is to be regulated, from welfare policies to rituals. She explains that the Confucian conception of the political leaves space open for the rule of those who are not virtuous if these rulers establish and maintain political order. She also contends that Confucians defend the duty to take part in government based on the benefits that such participation can bring to society.

Classical Confucian Political Thought brings a new understanding to Confucian political theory by illustrating that it is not chiefly idealistic and centered on virtue, but rather realistic and driven by political concerns.
