In the Shadow of the Alamo, by Sherry Garland

Fifteen-year-old Lorenzo Bonifacio never intended to be a soldier. But when the soldados raid his tiny Mexican village, Lorenzo finds himself forced to join General Santa Anna's army . . . all because of the pesky goatherd Catalina and the haughty Esteban Equivel, son of the wealthiest landowner in the region.
Taken under wing by the kind Sergeant Ildefonso, Lorenzo and Esteban endure boredom, exhaustion, and hunger as the army makes its way across Mexico to San Antonio de Bexar, where rebellious norte-americanos have barricaded themselves inside an old mission called El Alamo. Neither boy can imagine what lies at the end of the march--defeat, death, glory?--and neither can accept the price paid during the fight for Texas.

From School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-Although Lorenzo Bonifacio is only 15, he is conscripted into the Mexican army for 10 years. At first, he and Esteban Esquivel, the 17-year-old son of the wealthiest landowner in the region, have nothing to do with one another, but in the end they become friends. Life in the army is vividly described, and the bloody battle scenes are realistically drawn. Hardships such as the lack of food, arbitrary justice, and the total loss of personal rights are part and parcel of this military experience. The conscripts are given outdated weapons and are not trained for battle as they are considered mere "cannon fodder." The women and children who followed the men, including Lorenzo's aunt and two younger sisters, suffer the same hardships, and many do not survive the arduous trip on foot to Texas. Santa Anna is portrayed as cruel and self-centered, desiring personal glory at all costs. Enduring physical hardships and personal tragedies, Lorenzo is transformed from a simple farmer to a soldier, and from a child to a man. Told from his perspective, the story provides a different point of view on a well-known historical event. Readers will sympathize with both the Mexican soldiers and with the rebels. A book that captures and holds young people's attention.

From Booklist
Gr. 6-8. Fifteen-year-old Lorenzo Bonifacio, who has never left his Mexican village, is conscripted into the Mexican army and soon finds himself with troops headed to retake the Alamo from North American settlers. The journey is hard, but Lorenzo finds solace in unexpected friendships and belief in the cause. However, when the battle finally occurs, his beliefs are challenged and his perspective is broadened as he comes to realize that triumph and tragedy and heroes and villains aren't as easily defined as he thought. In this entry in the Great Episodes series, Garland offers an alternate viewpoint of a well-known American historical event through an intimate, lively narrative that engages and informs. Along the way, she interweaves details about Mexican culture and the daily life of the times, some Spanish terms, and historical background. Lorenzo's character growth and development are realistically and sympathetically portrayed in a story that illuminates the impact of war across class and cultural boundaries. Some sources are noted at the back, and a glossary is appended. Shelle Rosenfeld

Shows the "other side" of the Texas Revolution.
By Rebecca Herman
Nine years ago, Lorenzo's father was conscripted into the Mexican army, leaving behind Lorenzo, his little sister, and their pregnant mother. They never heard from him again. The year is now 1835, and life in their small village has not gotten any easier. Since his mother's death four years ago, Lorenzo has had to care for his two younger sisters. He believes the family is cursed and never expects to see his father again. While working in the fields, Lorenzo and some of the other village men are conscripted into the army to fight in the Texas campaign. Lorenzo, at fifteen, is too young to be conscripted, but the local landowner's son lies and says he meets the age requirement. Lorenzo is forced into a war he doesn't believe in, as his aunt and sisters join the other camp followers. Tragedy after tragedy follow on the long winter march to Texas. Their ultimate destination: the Alamo. The author has written a wonderful historical novel showing the "other side" in the Texas Revolution. The Mexican soldiers are portrayed as ordinary men who were forced to join the army and had no choice but to obey their superiors. I highly reccomend this book.

In the Shadow of The Alamo
By A Customer
The book In the Shadow of The Alamo by Sherry Garland was quite interesting. The book gave people a different perspective, it told the story in the Mexican point of view. The story was told by a 15-year-old boy named Lorenzo Bonifacio. He was a normal boy that had no wishes to be in General Santa Anna's army, but nonetheless was drafted. He cursed at the rich Esteban Esquivel for putting him there. Esteban lied to the military drafter saying that Lorenzo was in fact 16 years old, just the right age to join the army. Bonifacio pleaded to the military officials saying that he was only 15 and wasn't ready to join. The officials said nothing and continued drafting. Lorenzo knew that nothing could be done so he decided not to make any trouble, and especially not to desert, because deserters would get whipped on the back or worse even killed. Lorenzo's aunt and little sisters insisted on coming with him to carry his bags and other belongings. All the recruits were to march a long way to a city where they would receive training for war. After many days of long and tiring marching, the group finally arrived at the city. Exhausted the group set up camp and soon were around fires cooking their food. Lorenzo brought with him a small wooden flute and started to play a tune. All the people that heard the tune turned their head and listened to his beautiful music. When General Santa Anna heard the music he ordered Lorenzo to be his personal musician. After the recruits were trained they were issued guns and soon left camp. Lorenzo's troop was to head for the Alamo and kill all the rebels, (the Americans). It was a long and hard journey trough the woods and soon it became winter. Many people died because of the severe cold including both of Lorenzo's sisters. The general forced his men to keep moving and before long they had arrived at the Alamo. Lorenzo's troops were forced to charge without any cover from artillery, which arrived later. Many men died at once but the Mexicans won because of their numbers. Lorenzo's "friend" Esteban had a mortal wound and died a couple days later. Even though they won the battle Lorenzo felt like they had lost it. In the many days to come Lorenzo found that the Americans had regrouped. The Americans attacked them and killed everyone and even captured General Santa Anna. This was just a brief summary of the story In the Shadow of The Alamo and you should read it to find out more!

Alamo Aveneged!
By Roger Kennedy
This is a stirring story of a young Mexican peasant who is press-ganged into Santa Anna's army, as it prepares to march North into Texas to fight the Texan rebels at the Alamo and San Jacinto. While historical fiction, this is still a worthy book.
The author has paid close attention to historical details, and has correctly listed Mexican generals, regiments and battalions. While intended for young adults, older readers will find this an entertaining read as well. The story brings light upon the suffering and privations that the Mexican army endured in order to fight this campaign. Seen in this perspective, the legendary Texas heros of the Alamo seem mere mortals, and our sympathies go out instead to the poor, bedraggled, Mexican soldiers. While not one of the great armies of the day, the Mexican military suffered from chronic shortages, poor quality officers, and corruption. Not the least of its problems was in the form of Santa Anna himself, who lead irrationally, often marching his soldiers into the ground with little concern for their well-being. The Presidente's arrogance and vanity only compounded these problems.
At the Alamo 600 Mexican solders were sacreficed to his vanity. Had the great Napolean of the West waited a few more days for his siege guns to arrive, he could have reduced the Alamo Mission to ruins, and achieved his victory at far less cost. This book points out the dismay the Mexican soldiers felt from his arrogant and detached leadership. The humilating defeat at San Jacinto would end the forlorn Texas campaign and set the stage for the far greater conflict with the United States nearly a decade later, where Santa Anna would again lead his country to defeat.

This work provides information on such things as geometric sections, beams, trusses, arches, plates, etc., often under various loading conditions. Its chapter on frame analysis is notable. Also featured are such things as building foundations, pipes and tunnels, soils, retaining structures, etc.

Condensed convenience
By J. Klein
This is a very handy little book. Properties of plane areas, basic vibration, beam formulas, plates w/ various b.c.'s, foundations, frames, arches, earth retaining, pipes & tunnels. Think of it as a specialized, watered down Roark's with more than a few hidden gems. It was extremely useful in my exam and is still very used as a quick reference or for basic first passes and superpositions for more complicated problems.

I humbly suggest that the review mentioning units is unfounded. The book is unitless as far as I've seen, aside from the examples. The examples use metric units.

A Journey to Tao
By Nancy Bonnevier
Do you seek to assign meaning to suffering? Are you searching for a way to reconnect to God? If so, we share something in common. Years of seeking "truth" and exploring philosophies and religions have led me down many paths including Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Existentialism, etc. Each held a thread of truth for me - but none took me where I wanted...where I needed...to go. Veering from traditional paths, I looked to Mysticism, Gnosticism, Wicca, and other traditions to help me understand who we are - and how to get back to whom we are meant to be. Again more threads, but no answers. During this journey, I was only exposed briefly to the Chinese religion of Tao - literally the truth or the way.

Silently below my western radar, the Tao was far from my thoughts until through Tai Chi I was exposed to Master Waysun Liao's book - "Tao: The Way of God." Through this book, the threads I had been gathering were woven into a tapestry - a Gestalt reality that far transcends the sum of the painstakingly gathered parts I had tried to piece together. This is a belief system that confirms and celebrates what my heart and mind have been telling me all along. We are of God, and God - our "Te" is within us.

Using stories and metaphors, Master Liao humbly and stylistically shares a deceptively simple path back to the source - back to God. Advocating a simple lifestyle in which we are not consumed by distractions and demands, Liao describes sin as our movement away from God - nothing more - nothing less - how liberating! In a universe of constant movement, of Yin and Yang, our challenge, our hope, becomes to redirect our energy - our Chi - inward, back to the pure source of original energy, God, through the "dance" of moving meditation - Tai Chi.

Far from a member of the Tao or Tai Chi community, anything more I can say about Master Liao's gift would be reductionist and simplistic in nature. But I can tell you that in a world often bereft of faith - Master Liao offers hope:

"...the message of hope in this book is that if enough people do whatever is necessary to restore their connection to God, we can broadcast a message, that signal of original energy, out into the world. That signal may change our world's course by an inch, or even a half an inch. But that may be just enough..." p. 278.

Whatever your belief system or tradition, this book can honor and supplement your practices.

Read the book...join in the broadcast...

The ancient Tao Te Ching would seem to be respectful of all the major religions as Master Liao writes about it in this 281 page paperback. It is a deep, but easy book to read because of Liao's metaphors, and I liked reading one heading per day, as he breaks down the original from Lao Tzu into small parts.

Finding our life's energy, that connects to the Divine Energy, takes motivation, discipline, and practice. Master Liao says the ultimate way comes with learning Tai Chi in all sincerity from a Master. In the future I hope he writes more on its application in today's troubled world.

I recommend this book for anyone having an interest in or studying about Tao.

Very open insights from a gifted man
By Richard Gutwein
Having looked for a long time on authentic, from the source writings about meditation and the Taoist way, this was a great find. This book is clear, cutting and it feels like each word is purposfully placed, and it is written by a living authorative Taoist figure in the west. It answered some questions, raised some more, and is challanging as it depicts what a connection to the power of God requires and what that creative power enables. With everything else i have read and experienced it certainly helps provide greater understanding as to where i am now and what it takes to move on. It helped to also read the deluxe study edition of the authors book, Nine Nights with a Daoist Master, to grasp his concepts and way of thinking.

Ramon McKenzie gave his heart to Noah, only to have Noah up and leave him. For over two years there has been no word from Noah…but now he’s back. He'll do everything he can to have Ramon's forgiveness, and to claim his heart, but this time, for forever.

But where does that leave Sylvia? Not only is she the personal assistant to Michael and Sebastian McKenzie, but she’s also the woman Ramon has been taking around town, on and off since Noah left.

Nothing is straightforward in the lives of the McKenzie Brothers, and Ramon McKenzie’s life is no exception.

This is book 5 in the McKenzie Brothers series and can be read as a standalone.

Please note that this is an M/M romance with explicit scenes.

He left then returned to claim his man
By Emma
Two years ago Noah left without a trace taking Ramons heart with him.

Not knowing why he left Ramon cant move on, he is constantly reminded of him especially as his brothers is married to Noahs sister.

All of a sudden he returns but before Ramon will give his heart again he wants answers.

i loved this 5th instalment of the McKenzie brothers, and how we get to see them again. There are scene that left me needing a cold shower, amd parts that made me laugh out loud amd OMG the hot tub scene (i am not saying what happens as you will need to read for yourself but OMG)

Lexi buchanan did an amazing job again
By Marni Fox
I have loved all the mackenzie books, seeing Ramon finally get Noah warms my heart. I have had and sadly lost many gay male friends over the years so few of them ever found that happiness. I hope this book inspires everyone gay straight or any other orientation to never give up until they find this kind of happiness because we all deserve it and to hell with any moron that disagrees.

Noah and Ramon were electric together.
By Sabrina
The McKenzie Brothers series got lost on my tbr while I was waiting for the next release, but I'm happy I finally started reading it again. I skipped Entice because I just couldn't resist reading Ramon's story first. Major m/m lover right here.

This was a good story and the steam level was very high, which I loved! Noah and Ramon were electric together and I loved the scenes that had just them in it. Not that I didn't like the family parts of the book, because they were great too and I liked that this family was so close. But still, when Ramon and Noah were alone together I could feel the heat coming off of the pages and I was captivated.

I did have some issues with the story, but that was mostly because I couldn't remember much of what happened in the previous books or with the other characters. It says this can be read as a standalone, and if you aren't extra curious like me, then it can. But for me the little things that were mentioned about other character made me a tad confused because I just needed to know what was going on with them. Even with Ramon and Noah I felt like I was missing part of their beginning story.

Overall, this was a good story and I'm glad I finally got back to this family. I'll definitely be going back to read Entice and maybe do some re-reads about the rest of the McKenzie brothers.

StarCraft II: Devil's Due, by Christie Golden

It was at times like this that Jim Raynor, former marine lance corporal, proud citizen of the Confederacy and erstwhile farm boy, felt most alive. At the speed at which he was urging the vulture, the wind cooled his face so that the oppressive heat vanished. He felt like a wolf hunting down prey, except the purpose of today’s adventure was not the death of a living being but the death of the empty state of Raynor’s and Tychus’s wallets. This was a cargo train, not a passenger train, and inside its silvery innards was—if Tychus’s tip was right, and Jim had every reason to believe it would be—a very lovely, very large safe filled with Confederate credits.

“Why, it’s a rescue mission, Jim,” Tychus had rumbled, his blue eyes dancing with good humor as he had filled Raynor in on the plan. “Those poor creds—they’d just be condemned to lining the pockets of some Old Families who don’t need any more money. Or else put to some nefarious scheme that could hurt somebody. It’s our duty—hell, it’s our calling—to liberate them creds to where they could do something that really mattered.”

“Like buying us drinks, women, and steak dinners.”

“That’s a good start.”

“You’ve got a heart of gold, Tychus. I’ve never met such an altruistic man in my life. I got goddamn tears in my eyes.”

“It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it.”

Jim grinned as he recalled the conversation. He and Tychus were behind the train, catching up to it quickly. He stayed right and Tychus veered left. Tychus crossed over the maglev tracks, adjusting the magnetic frequency on his bike to compensate so that he, like the train itself, could cross easily. Jim increased his speed, moving alongside the maglev until the right car came into view. He and Tychus had spent hours analyzing all kinds of transportation vessels over the last few years, sometimes simply from blueprints or images, but usually up close and personal, as they were about to do now. They had “liberated” other credits before—it seemed to them like hundreds of thousands over the years, although the liberated credits never seemed to stay with them very long. That was all right too. It was part of the ride that life had become.

***

The year is 2494. Almost five years ago, Jim Raynor and Tychus Findlay were members of the Heaven’s Devils, an elite Confederate marine unit praised for its nerves of steeland combat expertise. After making a stand against their corrupt commanding officer, the two men were forced to go AWOL or risk being unjustly prosecuted and resocialized.

Now, Raynor and Findlay are outlaws hounded by an unyielding interstellar marshal. Life, however, has never beenbetter. Each day is another chance to pilfer more credits from the Confederacy’s deep coffers. Each night holds the promise of spending their hard-earned profits in bars, brothels, and gambling halls. But a man can only run so far before the law—and his past—catch up with him. . . .

Devils’ Due recounts an unforgettable period of Jim Raynor’s life as he descends into the Koprulu sector’s criminal underworld alongside the street-savvy Findlay. Here, far from his humble upbringing on the fringe world of Shiloh, Raynor will face some of the most trying challenges of his life. The decisions he makes will alter his destiny forever and put his father’s oft-spoken wisdom, “A man is what he chooses to be,” to the ultimate test.

Starscraft: Devil's Due is out of this world!
By Cheryl Koch
Jim Raynor and Tychus may have just hit their biggest's mark yet...a Confederate cargo train. Jim and Tychus make off with their goods including Confederate credits and a Jukebox.

To be honest, I am a computer game junkie. Though, I have not played the Starcraft games as much as Diablo or World of Warcraft. So, what drew me to this book was first the cover, I thought it was cool looking, second...the fact that it is based around the game, and third...I read the book summary and thought it sounded good. I have however read several books from author, Christie Golden. You can tell she is a dedicated gamer as well. She really brings the characters to life and as well as the story. It is as if you stepped into the game. I thought that Tychus and Raynor worked well together. They have each other's backs. Tychus and Raynor reminded me of good ole fashion outlaws but the ones that everyone wanted to win. Starcraft: Devil's Due is out of this world!

Another great Starcraft book.
By Kevin KaiYu Wong
I love the Starcraft universe, so I have read most of the books that are associated with Starcraft lore. It is written well, sticks to the story line from both old and new Starcraft lore, and has some great moments in action, story line, and relationships between the characters. This book is a great back story to the beginning story line to Tychus' story in this book and in the video game, Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty. Its a great read.

From Publishers Weekly
Rosen's prize-winning study The Classical Style was a wide-ranging look at music history. His latest book originated in seminars given to piano students at an Italian festival, and is divided into two sections, "Formal Principles" (considerations of phrasing and tempo, for example) and "The Sonatas" (analyses of the 18th- and early-19th-century sonatas). Rosen points out that though Beethoven wrote his sonatas at a time when such works were meant for amateur performances at home, he consistently made them too difficult for this purpose. He also observes that Beethoven rarely used simple indications of tempo, such as allegro (quickly) or lento (slowly); instead, he saddled his interpreters with complex and debatable instructions like allegro vivace e con brio (quickly, lively, and with gusto). How fast should the opening of the famous Moonlight sonata, which is "often taken at too slow a pace," be played? And what about the knuckle-busting Hammerklavier sonata, about which Rosen notes, "high-minded pianists consider the very fast tempo vulgar... [but] more than anything else, it is an explosion of energy"? Rosen addresses many such practical questions, and, in the accompanying CD, he plays excerpts from some of the sonatas to illustrate his points. Mostly steering clear of the kind of catty comments about performers and fellow critics that pepper his journalism, Rosen keeps his eye on the subject, and the result is measured and sane. A nice complement to, if not a substitute for, earlier books by Timothy Jones, Kenneth Drake and Robert Taub, this book's musical examples and occasional technical language should not turn off Ludwig-o-maniacs. (Mar.)Forecast: Sure to get endless plugs in the tony lit-crit rags where Rosen is omnipresent, like the New York Review of Books, this book will no doubt also benefit from Rosen's penchant for radio appearances as both interviewee and performer.

From Library Journal
Rosen, whose legendary books of music criticism (e.g., Critical Entertainments, LJ 4/1/00) are among the most lucid and valuable in print, has produced yet another outstanding work: a performer's guide to Beethoven's piano sonatas. Rosen divides the book into two equal parts. In the first, "Formal Principles," he discusses the musical elements of phrasing, tempo, and articulation as they pertain to all 32 sonatas. This is an enormously useful section, accompanied by copious musical examples, which the author himself illustrates on the companion CD. The second part deals with the sonatas individually. Here, Rosen departs from the traditional practice of dividing Beethoven's output into three large stylistic divisions: an early, a middle, and a late period. He argues as does pianist/author Robert Taub in his recent Playing the Beethoven Piano Sonatas and in the liner notes to his five-volume set of the complete piano sonatas for a more precise delineation of five categories, though his differs markedly from Taub's. Rosen labels his divisions "18th Century Sonatas" (Op. 2-22), "Youthful Popularity" (Op. 26-28), "The Years of Mastery" (Op. 31-81a), "The Years of Stress" (Op. 90-106), and "The Last Sonatas" (Op. 109-111). The text is rich in detail, and Rosen's prose is typically graceful and embracing. All admirers of this repertory will gain much from this book. Highly recommended for all collections. Music of a Lifetime
By Robin Friedman
Beethoven's 32 sonatas are the glory of music written for the piano. They are music of Beethoven's lifetime in that their composition spans the period from his early days in Vienna to near the end of his life. In another sense, Beethoven's piano sonatas are the music of my lifetime. I first was exposed to them as an early adolescent through concerts, records, and my own early attempts at playing the easier of them. Today, all too many years later (I am 55), I still try to play the sonatas and I go to recitals. I listen to them on CDs now instead of records. And I read about them, particularly Charles' Rosen's edudite and eloquent study. With short periods away, Beethoven's piano sonatas are probably the most lasting interest I have had in my life.
Rosen was inspired to write this book by giving a performance of the sonata cycle and to lecture on Beethoven at a summer music festival and school. The book is, on one level, a continuation of Rosen's study, "The Classical Style" with application to the Beethoven sonatas. The book is marked by its wide-ranging references. There is a great deal of specific discussion of Beethoven's piano sonatas, of course, but the book is enriched immeasurably by examples from and discussions Mozart, Haydn, and Schubert, as their works are compared and contrasted with Beethoven's.
The book is divided into two Parts. Part I, "The Tradition" begins with a discussion of the nature and development of the sonata form. Rosen describes well how Beethoven's sonatas have, until very recent years, been a bridge from the world of performance of classical music in the home to its appreciation in the concert hall. This was certainly the case with me.
The book discusses various ways in which the sonatas have been interpreted over the years and attempts to find that elusive quarry -- the manner in which the composer would have interpreted the sonatas. Rosen devotes a great deal of attention to questions of tempo and questions of phrasing, with examples from Beethoven's predecessors. He concludes that modern performers place more emphasis on a smooth legato style than would have been the case in Beethoven's day and that Beethoven's tempos would be somewhat different from those at which we now hear the music. In some cases, tempos would have been faster, but I get the impression that in the main tempos were taken at a slower pace. The book comes with a CD recorded by Guiilio Caesare Ricci which illustrates helpfully many of Rosen's musical examples. Rosen stresses that there is no single way of performing these complex, wonderful pieces of music. His discussion of performance practices still is highly useful in understanding the sonatas and in listening to them.
The second part of the book consists of a chronological discussion of each of the 32 sonatas. The discussion is arranged in five parts: a)the early 18th Century sonatas (the sonatas from opus 2 to opus 22); b) the sonatas of Beethoven growing in popularity and independent style (the sonatas from opus 26 to opus 28) c) the sonatas in which Beethoven attained mastery (the sonatas from opus 31 through opus 81a) d). the sonatas composed during Beethoven's years of stress and personal difficulty (the opus 90 and opus 101 sonatas and the "Hammerklavier" sonata, opus 106 ); and e)the last sonatas (opus 109. 110,111)
In each instance Rosen offers some general comments on the character of each sonata followed by detailed thematic, harmonic and pianistic discussions.
I found it useful in this section of the book to read first Rosen's discussion of the sonatas with which I was most familiar, either by attempting to play them or by repeated hearings over the years. Thus I began with Rosen's discussion of the opus 26 sonata and followed it the the "Waldstein", the "Pathetique" and the opus 90 sonata. I then went through Rosen's discussion work by work as it appeared in the book. There is much to be learned, and Rosen's discussion will be useful in listening to the sonatas and following along with the score or with Rosen's discussion.
It is worth noting that Rosen spends a great deal of time on sonatas which are relatively little performed, particularly the opus 54 (which is given in full on the CD that comes with the book) and with the opus 31 no. 1 sonata. His discussion of these work illuminates them and illuminates Beethoven's output. He also gives thorough discussions of more familiar works particularly the "Moonlight" sonata and the Hammerklavier -- with respect to the latter, he follows-up upon the lengthy analysis of this work in The Classical Style.
Beethoven's piano sonatas are indeed music of a lifetime. If you love them, by playing or by hearing them, you will love this book. If you want to learn about them, this book will be an outstanding guide.

Charles Rosen by now is one of the foremost writers on music, especially piano music, of the Classic and Romantic eras. His books _The Classical Style_ and _The Romantic Generation_ are classics of their kind.
Inevitably, given Rosen's prolific output and its specialization, there is a slight feeling of deja vu about this volume on Beethoven's sonatas for piano. Rosen is laboring under the shade of such great writers on Beethoven as Donald Tovey. Nevertheless, the book offers fresh perspectives and many stimulating new ideas in its opening section, which views the sonatas through general topics such as "Phrasing" and "Tempo." The second section, consisting of commentaries on the individual works, more clearly apes Tovey and here, considered word for word, the older writer probably offers more detailed and practical insights for the serious piano student into the actual performance of these great works than Rosen. Nevertheless, this book is a valuable addition to any collection of writings on music.

Part of the established cannon
By D. J. Leedham
For specialists and professional musicologists Rosen's commentary may be a bit light and no longer the most current reading of the Beethoven piano sonata scores. -- But for those of us who seek some insight and perspective on Beethoven's aesthetic as it is expressed in various performances:- before, during and since the "Rosen epoch"...well, seems to me this is essential reading. Along with Tovey for a richer perspective between them. (Rosen quotes Tovey quite frequently) Clearly he feels he has more to add. From what I've read so far this is correct. Also Rosen is available in print. Tovey is hard to find.

Rosen's introductory section approaches the technical language and conceptual problems ("Sonata Form, Phrasing, tempo, and so forth.) he finds needing some clarification and exposition before diving into the work-by-work analysis. I found this particularly instructive.

Already I am "seeing" and hearing with more discernment and, (surely the point.) enjoyment.

Highly recommended.
