The Euro remains one of the single most fascinating monetary experiments of our time--unifying countries with little in the way of a common political identity across a common currency. A vast amount of ink has been spilled on the ongoing crisis in Europe, but few of these expositions have been able to offer a comprehensive, objective account of what is happening in Europe, and more importantly, why it matters for our investment outlook. this is one of the most convincing books on current financial events i've ever read. The author presents a very cohesive and credible discussion on the Euro to date, and offers a highly personal and well researched essay on the matter. This discussion is relevant to everyone who participates in the global economy, and the clear, unassuming, yet highly informative narrative makes it accessible to all readers. this a rare jewel in the current offering of books on this and other financial/economic matters. Nordvig takes on issues that most would find too big or too sensitive to raise in such a forum, with a fearless and admirable partiality that is perfectly tempered by his very fair and evenhanded reading of the Euro (today) and its short history.

Guri and Gura, popular characters in Japan since their 1963 debut (of which this book is the translation), enter the American market with the first of the publisher's projected series. Here, the two exuberant mice find a huge egg in the forest and decide to use it to make "a sponge cake so big we can eat it from dawn to dusk and still have some left over." Realizing that the egg is too big to move, Guri and Gura haul a huge frying pan (and everything else they need) over to the egg, then mix up the batter, build a fire and share the results with all the animals who have sniffed out their cake. Yamawaki's pared-down line drawings deliver information plainly and directly, with little shading on an expansive white background: Gura holds the lid of the pan (which towers over him), Guri raises his tiny mouse fist in excitement, and the nicely risen cake is revealed. A childlike refrain becomes a light-hearted mantra: "My name is Guri. And my name is Gura. And what do you think we like to do best? Cook and eat. Eat and cook. Yeah! Guri and Gura, that's us." The book's visual appeal is dampened somewhat by bland type design and bleed-through on the matte pages. But cake-making is always a delicious theme for small readers, and Guri and Gura's inventive energy loses nothing in the Pacific crossing. Ages 4-8.

This is my daughter's favorite series in Japanese version

This used to be even my favorite 30 something years ago. It is an awesome book. I have been reading it to my 4 years old daughter since she was 2. She loves Guri and Gura and is even asking me to make stuffed Guri & Gura Dolls. Authurs are sisters. They have been creating at least 5 different stories of Guri and Gura in Japan.

Only sad part is that in Japanese version, there is a lovery poem that you can create your own melody and sing together. I have heard that It is not there in English version. That is the only reason it is only 4 stars not 5.

4 1/2 If You GIve Two Mice a Really Huge Egg....

According to the flyleaf, "field mice Guri and Gura are the beloved companions of generations of Japanese children and are among the most recognizable of Japanese children's book characters." Amazon.com offers ten books in the series, and if this one is representative of the titles, the little mice will be spending time in many American bedrooms.

There are many appealing elements, but one immediately notices the overall sweet simplicity, the close bond of the mice, and the uncluttered but eye-catching pictures. The action begins when the foraging mice discover a gigantic egg, a egg that fires their imaginations with culinary possibilities. But the huge eggs presents multiple challenges as well. It's too big to bring home in theri basket, too smooth to hold, and too delicate to roll along the ground. At this point, the adult reader might want to ask the young audience, "What would YOU do if you were Guri or Gura? More challenges ensue: How do you crack open such a big egg? After baking a humongous sponge cake, what will the two cute mice do when "all the animals in the woods soon gather round, wiggling their noses?" The answer will please proponents of sharing:

"That's right, we're the sponge cake bakers--Guri and Gura, that's us! We're not stingy or mean--Guri and Gura, that's us! So you'll get a bite, just you wait and see!

THe animals peacefully share the giant yellow sponge cake, but one more challenge remains: What do you do with "the empty cooking pan and a gigantic eggshell?" The can-do mice solve this one too, driving their impromptu eggmobile to another adventure. Full of colorful uncluttered pictures, this sweetly simple book, abounds with opportunitiesfor laughter and problem-solving.

About the Author
Ali Hernandez is currently a Gas Lift Specialist with Zakum Development Company. Previously, he worked for NExT (Network of Excellence in Training) with Schlumberger teaching multiple courses worldwide on gas lift, and for close to 30 years he worked for PDVSA in Venezuela as a project leader, instructor, and lead advisor and was accredited by the PDVSA Education and Training Center. Hernandez has published in multiple journals and conferences and remains very active as Chairman on the API Committee's Gas Lift Task Force. He earned a Bachelor and Masters, both in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the University of Delaware.

A mature Camino experience

As I enter retirement, with children mostly independent and care for my elderly mother shared with siblings, I look forward to exploring experiences that demand considerable time and good health. Long distance walking is one of those experiences.
'Each step is the journey' recounts Patricia Klink's physical, social, psychological, emotional and ethical responses to walking the 'Camino Frances', 790 km from deep southern France to Santiago de Compostela. Her book is both a brutally frank and wonderfully insightful description of her interactions with her companions, with people she meets (other pilgrims and local residents) and, most interestingly of all, with herself, providing a stream of recollections from decades of success, failure, happiness, regrets and seldom-resurrected memories of family and friends. These are both comforting to her in times of difficulty, and painful as she finds herself dealing with suppressed or forgotten memories. Her experiences on the Camino also frequently raise reference to other places, experiences and feelings, from her life in Canada's western prairies and elsewhere. And Klink's educated mind contributes references to literature and philosophy as she works through her experiences.
Klink doesn't make light of the challenges she faced, and the changes she feels have occurred to her. The end of the journey seems to be far from what she anticipated.
This book provides a realistic take on the joys and difficulties of completing the Camino in a single walk, and inspires me to look forward to this experience.

A Hidden Gem

I love to have fun with the title but other than that, this is an extremely well written book. I am preparing to make the journey across northern Spain in a little over a month. I have been reading everything I can get my hands on in preparation. Of all the books and blogs I have read, this one stands out among the best. Patricia expresses her intrinsic and extrinsic journey very well in her writing. I love her spiritual encounters. What can I say? Its a very good book. With all the books about a pilgrim's journey on the Camino by well known authors, this is a hidden gem! Thank you Patricia Klinck!

About the Author

Helen Cowie is Professor Emeritus and Director of the UK Observatory for the Promotion of Non-Violence (www.ukobservatory.com) at the University of Surrey in the Faculty of Health and Medicine. A psychologist by background, she teaches a range of education, psychology, and health and social care students. For over 20 years she has specialized in strategies to counteract school bullying, including peer support as an effective intervention that empowers children and young people to take action themselves to help other young people who are experiencing social and emotional difficulties. Her widely-used training manual Peer Support in Action, co-authored with Patti Wallace, influenced practice in the UK and other European countries. In 2009 it was translated into Japanese following a long-standing collaboration with the Japanese Peer Support Association.

In Managing School Violence, she and co-author Dawn Jennifer designed training for a whole-school approach to reduce and prevent bullying, while New Perspectives on Bullying emphasized the importance of fostering positive relationships in the school community as a whole and provided a wealth of evidence-based good practice for professionals. Her co-authored book Understanding Children's Development remains one of the most popular undergraduate psychology textbooks in the field and a fifth edition was published in 2011.
