Scott's slim book is a perfect initial foray into Western art history without the pages and pages of detail that can obscure the big picture. Rather than being heavily-detailed and image-based, like Gardner's or the like, each section in "Approaches" (ranging from ancient to modern) provides a succinct discussion of a period/style/movement. That discussion then provides a framework upon which to build a detailed understanding via lectures and/or your favorite Volkswagen-sized tomes. Also, "Approaches" includes chapters on aesthetics, art history methodologies, study skills, and two glossaries - one of materials and techniques, and one of art and architecture terminology.
