The Stalin Era, by Anna Louise Strong

I THINK THAT, looking back, men will call it "the Stalin Era.” Tens of millions of people built the world’s first socialist state, but he was the engineer. He first gave voice to the thought that the peasant land of Russia could do it. From that time on, his mark was on all of it, on all the gains and all the evils. It is too soon to sum up the era, and yet one must try to. For controversy has arisen over it and the beliefs of many around the world are being torn. It is the very best people who are most disturbed by Khrushchev’s revelations of thousands of brutal injustices and harsh repressions when socialism was for the first time built. They are asking: Was this necessary? Is that always the path to socialism? Or was it the evil genius of one man?

I absolutely love this book
By Amazon Customer
I absolutely love this book, it's a refreshing look at the era from a woman who extensively traveled, worked, and spoke to people in the USSR instead of the usual prattlings of people who never set foot in the country. The only problem I have with this book is that the formatting in the paperback form is very odd. A lot of times there are places where there will be random characters strewn about, breaking sentences and making things incredibly confusing. In addition, quotes are often times irregularly spaced and there's even one or two random computer file names in the book. However, I give it five stars because it's absolutely mandatory reading for anyone wanting to look at the Stalin era.

A Pro-Soviet look at the Stalin Era
By M W
Anna Louise Strong was a left-wing journalist who spent much of her life living in the Communist world reporting on conditions and events she found there. Clearly she was sympathetic to the Stalinist regimes in those countries and even after her 1949 arrest in Russia she continued to see the best in what the "socialist bloc" offered. This book is her interpretation and explanation of the Stalin Era and why there were so many illegal and despotic actions by Stalin and his cohorts. The historical value of this effort is because Ms Strong represents the point of view of those Americans and others who continued to believe that despite the Khrushchev revelations, the Soviet system was nevertheless more beneficial and progressive than Western capitalism and should should therefore be supported regardless of any past misdeeds. As might be expected by an apologist for Soviet Communism, she glosses over many indefensible acts and provides little criticism. However, my main quarrel with the book is the incredibly poor editing and apparently no proof-reading before printing. There are mis-spellings and inexplicable characters and words on virtually every page. For example, what did the typesetters mean by "...war of the zvfiwe people..."? Or "They found a total destruction such as men 100 Emacs-File-stamp:tx had not been seen..."? Or "...giving the c/edi fortifications to Hitler..."? Plus there are random two or three digit numbers throughout the book placed in the middle of the text yet signifying nothing: "...Stalin could no longer be overthrown 63 by political means...", or "...may we be as 107 frank as possible..." Even the publisher must have been embarrassed by the dreadfully poor job of preparing this edition for print, inasmuch as there is no publisher named or listed in the book! All in all, I found some information useful to my studies of the Soviet Union under Stalin, but found reading the book extremely irritating and frustrating. Hopefully a new and corrected edition will be forthcoming.
