Several friends of mine are mentioned in this or wrote poems for Winning Hearts and Minds. I used a college deferment to avoid the draft but others went out of obligation or bad luck. Bad luck born of lack of privilege. If you were not there, you should read this and count your blessings.

Great book to get you up to speed with the powerful new ASP.NET Core!
By R. Zelt
This book is well written and well planned to give the reader a good foundation of understanding and real world scenarios to better understand the new world of ASP.NET Core. ASP.NET Core brings a powerful set of new tools, but also a lot of changes to the old ways of doing things. This book makes an excellent guide to get you up to speed and provide a rich resource going beyond the basics. The authors have put together a lot of great info!

Hard to follow
By Gary Bushey
This book is quite hard to follow. It is like they are trying to tell a story but that makes it hard to find the information you need. They put chapters on Azure, Containers, and Cross-Platform before chapters like Entity Framework, Views, and Configuration which can really confuse people as these are more advanced concepts and, IMHO, should appear towards the end of the book.

Introduce many technologies and frameworks without much detail
By Win
Title is misleading. I thought I will be developing ASP.Net Core application from start to finish in 4 sprints. I was wrong; authors divide the book into 4 sections, and call each part as Sprint. It is definitely not same Sprint we use in Agile development with Scrum.

I wish I could write the sample project from the scratch along with the book, but it is not designed to read that way. Authors use the source from GitHub, and then randomly pull out codes from the project and briefly explain them in the book. Some codes explained in the books do not match up the downloaded source code.

I should have started reading from part 3 and 4 before part 1 and 2. I personally think sample project is excellent, and follows good practices. I wish authors focus more on the sample project instead of introducing new technologies and techniques totally out of the scope such as Docker Container, Azure Blob Storage and Azure AD, and leave you with many questions.

Authors definitely have extensive knowledge on the subject, and want to introduce you with new technologies in each chapters. Although the book said previous version of MVC experience is not required, I personally think reader should be mid to senior developer or software architect in order to fully understand and implement those technologies.

Woods, Lakeboat, Edmond, by David Mamet

"The Woods," described by the Chicago Daily News as a “beautifully conceived love story,” is a modern dramatic parable in which a young man and woman who spend a night in his family’s cabin experience passion, then disillusionment, but are in the end reconciled by mutual need.

In "Lakeboat," eight crew members aboard a merchant ship exchange their wild fantasies about sex, gambling, and violence.

In "Edmond," a man set morally adrift leaves an unfulfilling marriage to find sex, adventure, companionship, and, ultimately, the meaning of his existence.

Of The Woods, Richard Eder of The New York Times wrote that Mamet’s “language has never been so precise, pure, and affecting.”

Michael Feingold in The Village Voice praised "Lakeboat" for its “richly overheard talk and its loopy, funny construction.”

Jack Kroll of Newsweek called "Edmond" “a riveting theatrical experience that illuminates the heart of darkness.”

three mamet plays who all share the weakness of modern men
By A Customer
the bool consists of three plays: Lakeboat- mamet's first play who tells the story of a boat crew who's one of his members is missing. throughout the play, rhe crew is exposed to its weaknesses and desperation, it's a bitter-sweet play, but it lacks the surprise element that can be seen in "glengarry glen ross" etc. The woods- a stoory of an imossible love between an educated yet emotionally cold man and his needy girlfriend, it's a play that floats steadily untill the big burst in the end, for patiant readers only! Edmond- a violent play about a buffled young man who decides to make a journey in search of maening and ends up ruining his life as well as others, it's a merciless look on urban reality

Edmond is Brilliant
By Max
Because of the sheer power of one of the plays contained within this book, I have given this collection 4 out of 5 possible stars.

Edmond is amazingly stark and real, and offers a complete reversal in character, and the last scene seems like an epiphony. This play is easily my favorite, and I have seen it performed in London by Kenneth Branag, it was most astonishing and brilliant. I have not read or seen either of the two other plays contained within theis volume, but I will say that Edmond is definitely a great reason to buy this book.

RE: Edmond
By Amazon Customer
Edmond is a real trip. Not exactly a pleasant trip, but definitely a walk on the wild side.

It's set in New York. As the play starts off, Edmond, a man in his mid thirties, goes to see a fortune teller who reads his palm and tells him, "You are not where you are belong..." In the next scene Edmond is at home with his wife. They have the following dialogue:
...
Edmond: Yes. Alright - I am going.
Wife: Will you bring me back some cigarettes?
Edmond: I'm not coming back.
Wife: What?
Edmond: I'm not coming back.(Pause.)
Wife: What do you mean?
Edmond: I'm going, and I'm not going to come back.
Wife: You're not ever coming back?
Edmond: No.

Just like that Edmond abandons his established life. He then goes to strip clubs, a whorehouse, he walks on the street by three card monte hustlers, he rides on the subway. He becomes agitated by the urban dissonance. He starts to argue with people. He gets in trouble with the law.

The play has an interesting style. It's fast paced - the whole thing is one act with 23 scenes. Some of the scenes are very short, less than half a page. Also, they're somewhat disconnected. One minute Edmond's in a pawnshop, the next, on the subway. It's surreal. I couldn't tell you how long the action takes place over.

I've got mixed feelings about most Mamet plays, but Edmond I've read several times. I love it's fast pace and it's bizarro quality.

Inspiring, Insightful, and Practical
By Doug Woolley
I enjoyed reading this book, which inspired me. It was a motivational, success-oriented book, in addition to being a technical oriented book. There is so much practical advice in those chapters. I am amazed at the author's insight and wisdom. I did not expect to see these kinds of chapters in the book, thinking that it was strictly a technical book, but the author is certainly right that these are techniques that will help a person become a better software architect. I like the emphasis on building a network of people outside your immediate group. I like the emphasis on continuous education by reading (or listening to books): If anyone ever sees my library at home (perhaps from pictures on my Web site), you will realize that I am passionate about reading and learning new things. Having a "teaching gift," I enjoy teaching others the things that I learn, as also recommended in the book. The book really drives home the principles (mentioned in Part 3). I highly recommend anyone who wants to excel in their software career to read this book.

Good read with good advices
By Fuat Yazar
10 days ago i received the book in the mail. It was my company on the train to / from work. I can not finish most of the books I buy, keep them as reference. Because they have mostly templates, rules, etc which I forget, and boring.

But this book, You can be a Software Architect, was not written that way, instead sometimes I felt I am listening to a friend, sometimes a mentor, sometimes a coworker.

I just finished the book, on the train again. I will try to implement the ideas given in the book.

Especially the diagram Phases of Performance has an excellent explanation.

One thing I noticed, the book was printed on the day I bought, probably it is on demand.

(1974) and Ph.D. (1976) in Bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His graduate research was on the hot spring bacterium Chloroflexus in the laboratory of Thomas Brock. Following a three-year postdoctoral at Indiana University, Mike moved to Southern Illinois University–Carbondale, where he taught introductory microbiology and bacterial diversity as a professor of microbiology for 33 years. In 1988 Mike was selected as the Outstanding Teacher in the College of Science and in 1993, the Outstanding Researcher. In 2001 he received the SIUC Outstanding Scholar Award. In 2003 he received the Carski Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching from the American Society for Microbiology, and he is an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. Mike’s research is focused on bacteria that inhabit extreme environments, and for the past 15 years he has studied Antarctic microbiology. In addition to research papers, he has edited a major treatise on phototrophic bacteria and served for 10 years as chief editor of the journal Archives of Microbiology. He currently serves on the editorial board of the journals Environmental Microbiology and Antonie van Leeuwenhoek. Mike’s nonscientific interests include forestry, reading, and caring for his dogs and horses. He lives on a quiet lake with his wife, Nancy, four shelter dogs (Gaino, Pepto, Peanut, and Merry), and three horses (Eddie, Gwen, and Festus).

John M. Martinko received his B.S. in Biology from The Cleveland State University. He then worked at Case Western Reserve University, conducting research on the serology and epidemiology of Streptococcus pyogenes. His doctoral work at the State University of New York at Buffalo investigated antibody specificity and antibody idiotypes. As a postdoctoral fellow, he worked at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York on the structure of major histocompatibility complex proteins. Since 1981, he has been in the Department of Microbiology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale where he was Associate Professor and Chair, and Director of the Molecular Biology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry Graduate Program. His research interests centered on the structure- function relationships of immune system proteins, including immunoglobulins, T cell receptors, and major histocompatibility proteins. His teaching interests include an advanced course in immunology as well as immunology and inflammation instruction to medical students. For his educational efforts, he won the 2007 Southern Illinois University Outstanding Teaching Award. He has been active in a number of educational outreach programs for pre-university students and teachers. He has also been a faculty member at Bard College in their innovative Citizen Science program, an interactive laboratory, computer and problem-based-learning science curriculum that introduces freshmen students to critical thinking through the discovery and application of scientific principles. He was the Chair of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at SIUC and continues to act as a consultant in the area of animal care. He is also an avid golfer and cyclist. John lives in Carbondale with his wife Judy, a high school science teacher.

Kelly S. Bender received her B.S. in Biology from Southeast Missouri State University (1999) and her Ph.D. (2003) in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry from Southern Illinois University–Carbondale.  Her dissertation work focused on the genetics of perchlorate-reducing bacteria. During her post-doctoral fellowship, Kelly worked on the genetic regulation of sulfate-reducing bacteria in the laboratory of Judy Wall at the University of Missouri–Columbia.  She also completed a transatlantic biotechnology fellowship at Uppsala University in Sweden researching regulatory small RNAs in bacteria.  In 2006, Kelly returned to her alma mater, Southern Illinois University–Carbondale, as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in 2012. Her lab studies a range of topics including the regulation of stress responses by small RNAs, microbial community dynamics of sites impacted by acid mine drainage, and the bioremediation of uranium by metal- and sulfate-reducing bacteria. Kelly teaches courses in microbial genetics and molecular biology, has served on numerous federal grant review panels, and is an active member of the American Society for Microbiology. Her other interests include biking, cooking, and spending time with family, friends, and her miniature schnauzer, Pepper.

Daniel H. Buckley is an Associate Professor at Cornell University in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences. He earned his B.S. in Microbiology (1994) at the University of Rochester and his Ph.D. in Microbiology (2000) at Michigan State University. His graduate research focused on the ecology of soil microbial communities and was conducted in the laboratory of Thomas M. Schmidt in affiliation with the Center for Microbial Ecology. Dan's postdoctoral research examined linkages between microbial diversity and biogeochemistry in marine microbial mats and stromatolites and was conducted in the laboratory of Pieter T. Visscher at the University of Connecticut. Dan joined the Cornell faculty in 2003. His research program investigates the ecology and evolution of microbial communities in soils with a focus on the causes and consequences of microbial diversity. He has taught both introductory and advanced courses in microbiology, microbial diversity, and microbial genomics. Lots on microbes before getting to medical implications
By DNAunion
The first thing I like about the text is that it has a lot of chapters devoted to microbes before getting to the medical microbiology parts. I have one other microbiology text and it basically pays lip service to microbes across a few chapters and then spends the rest of the book talking about what diseases various microbes produce. There is nothing wrong with that if you are interested primarily in the medical aspects of microbiology, but what if you are interested in microbiology for the sake of microbiology itself? You get shortchanged. But this text has chapter after chapter covering microbes, in detail, before getting into the chapters devoted to medical implications.

The second thing I like about the text is that I keep finding interesting tidbits of information: things you don't usually get from reading molecular cell biology texts and other biology texts. Things such as, the largest individuals of the bacterial species Thiomargarita namibiensis have a diameter of about 750 micrometers, making it about 5 times the size of a typical paramecium; Archaea do not have fatty acids in the membrane lipids; some Archaea have a monolayer instead of a phospholipid bilayer; many Archaeal lipids contain rings in the hydrocarbon chains; some prokaryotes have membrane-bounded (but monolayer) inclusions such as magnetosomes, PHAs, and sulfur granules; heterocystous cyanobacteria have a differentiated cell called a heterocyst where nitrogenase is protected from oxygen; some plasmids are linear; even though E. coli can double in population size in 20 minutes it take 40 minutes to replicate the chromosome; and so on.

I'm just amazed, this textbook is so easy to read, very interesting, and just outstanding. Highly recommend this if you are a microbio major or are interested in biology on a deeper level.

International Human Rights Law in Africa, by Frans Viljoen

This book provides a comprehensive and analytical overview of human rights law in Africa. It examines the institutions, norms, and processes for human rights realization provided for under the United Nations system, the African Union, and sub-regional economic communitites in Africa, and explores their relationship with the national legal systems of African states.

Since the establishment of the African Union in 2001, there has been a proliferation of regional institutions that are relevant to human rights in Africa. These include the Pan African Parliament, the Peace and Security Council, the Economic, Social and Cultural Council and the African Peer Review Mechanism of the New Partnership for Africa's Development. This book discusses the links between these institutions. It further examines the case law stemming from Africa' most important human rights instrument, the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights, which entered into force on 21 October 1986. This new edition contains a new chapter on the African Children's Rights Committee as well as full coverage of new developments and instruments, such as the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Convention on Enforced Disappearances, and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.

Three cross-cutting themes are explored throughout the book: national implementation and enforcement of international human rights law; legal and other forms of integration; and the role of human rights in the eradication of poverty. The book also provides an introduction to the relevant human rights concepts.

Review
Review from previous edition: "This book embodies the knowledge acquired by an eminent and well-respected African scholar and activist who has worked within the African human rights system for many... it does provide the uninitiated with a very comprehensive overview of human rights in Africa. The bibliography alone is a useful and comprehensive reference point. This volume therefore is highly recommended reading for anyone who wants to get a taste of the ways in which the various institutions, both African and otherwise, have considered human rights on the continent" --Human Rights Law Review (9)
